The Sounds of Summer Look what’s coming to First Presbyterian in Greensboro Starting on June 23 the “Sounds of Summer" are coming to the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Greensboro. Inspired by the Biblical instruction to “sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God," summer worship services at 10 a.m. will feature psalms both beloved and troubling in June, favorite hymns in July, and songs found in Scripture in August. In addition, three Sunday evening events are planned. June 23 at 5:00 PM: The church will be holding a Taize Prayer Service...a simple, meditative form of ecumenical worship involving sung and chanted prayer, meditation, periods of silence and Scripture readings. This form of Christian worship began with a Swiss named Brother Roger after a long convalescence from tuberculosis. He left Switzerland in 1940 and settled in the small French village of Taize where he began to form a community of like-minded worshipers. During World War II they provided safe shelter to refugees, Jews and agnostics fleeting the ravages of war. Today the Taize community has Catholic, Anglican and Protestant members from nearly thirty countries and numbers around eighty...a tangible sign of reconciliation between divided Christians. We invite you to come and experience this unique form of meditation. July 21 at 5:00 PM: Something special happens during a community hymn sing, as ordinary people from a wide variety of backgrounds get together and sing. It has been said that those who sing pray twice; those who sing together amplify our prayers and praises and feed our souls... something to be experienced and cherished. So come and join us on that late Sunday afternoon. Shout out your favorite hymn for all to enjoy and sing! August 25 at 5:00 PM: If you’ve never experienced music that combines elements of old- time mountain music, square dance fiddling, blues, gospel, jazz and even popular music, then you’re in for a treat. We’re bringing the Doug Flowers Band to Greensboro! The Doug Flowers Band is a well-known group of bluegrass musicians from near Augusta, Georgia. Their style of playing is a tribute to this musical art form. So, mark Sunday, August 25 on your calendar. We’d love to see you at this musical event and, best of all, it’s free of charge! All three events are taking place at the First Presbyterian Church located at 117 South Main Street (next to the Post Office) in downtown Greensboro. For more information, feel free to contact the church at 706-453-4956 or fpcgreensboroga@gmail.com.
