Prof. Stevens informed us that lie began his second week with 67 pu¬ pils. Davis and Callaway, one of the best firms in Amerieus, have as¬ signed. Will not the teachers in the coun¬ try report to us the size of their schools? Mr. Ammie Gaines is teaching in the western part of the county, with 30 pupils. Miss Mittie Myers, we are inform¬ ed, has 34 students. Hhe is teaching at Pine Grove Academy. Znck Anglin, has rented the store next door toChipley and Murphy and moved his stock into it. Can’t some one inform us who that Yankee Girl is that went for the Smithville Enterprise last week ? Mr. G. D. Hayes, lost an afflicted child last Friday. From what we could learn, it had a complication of diseases. We are glad to report Mrs. C. L. Battle, much improved this week, she being able to walk about the house a little. Rev. J. T. Lowe preached a fine sermon last Sunday, to a large and appreciative congregation, at the Methodist church. NOTICE. Wonder why the Montezuma Re¬ cord, can’t invite his poor brethren to take a ride on his fine steamer. He loves to brag about it and we are glad for him, and wish it abundant success and hope we will get an in¬ vitation to take a ride, but don’t want to take part of that ride out in a healthy walk. Mr. Fletch Wright, of Webster county, has gone into the ice ness. He hired an Ohio man to work on the farm; the man had not been there long before the never to he forgotten freeze came; and he began to talk ice until he got Mr. i \Y., in the notion to try it; his mill pond being near by the man went to work, and soon had an ice house completed and filled with ice, Th r. Hinton, of Amerieus, was in town last Tuesday. Mr. Augustus Askew, father of Mrs. 1*. F. Dixon, is very sick. Col. W. A. Hawkins, of Americas, was in town last Tuesday. He re¬ ports Ids son Col. Eugene Hawkins, suifering. The following rates of tuition per month lias been established i by the Board of Trustees of l-.lla- ville Academy: 1st. Spelling, Heading and Men¬ tal Arithmetic $1.50. 2nd. Geography, Arithmetic and English Gra; nir, $2.00. 3rd. Higher English branches, or Latin and Greek, $2.50. The Free school fund will be cred- ited on these amounts. The Courier-Journal is one of the best papers in the LTnited States; it is in our opinion unexceled anywhere. If you want to know all about na¬ tional affairs read it; if you want to know all about tariff reform, read it; it will keep you posted oil ail ques- tions of general interest. We would not be without it for double and thribble its cost. Take the Courier- Journal. The Arkunsaw Traveler, is a very fine paper. The humor in it is hard to beat. Don’t forget that we club with them; also with the Weslyan Christian Advocate. The religious organ of the Metho¬ dist church in the state of Georgia. Miss Janie Williams, spent a few day’s in town the first of the week. Miss Nele Merritt, is in the city she will teach school for Mrs. C. li. Keen. Mrs. Gammage, returned home Monday after two days visit to Mrs. H. Willis. Miss Lillian Nixon, after a few days visit to friends in Marshall- ville returned Sunday night. They say Gene Willis, took out! his watch every two minutes at Lutheran Sunday lie would open it and shut it, then look to see if she was looking at him. Engineer A. W. Mitchell’s condition. Engineer A. W. Mitchell, of the Southwestern Hail road, who was badly injured by a Hying barof some time ago, has entirely recov- ered his health. His eyes, howev- er, are in such a condition as to make him almost totally blind. Superintendent T. D. Kline will take him to Atlanta this week to be treated by' Dr. Calhoun. Engineer Mitchell is financially very well provided for. The road pays him one hundred and thirty dollars per month, and he receives twenty dollars a week from an acci- dent insurance company. Should Dr. Calhoun decide that Engineer Mitchell cannot recover his eye- sight, he will receive three thousand dollars on a policy which lie holds in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.-Macon Telegraph, Fine Young Hyson and Oolong Tea, at the Drug Store, H liai \V«* Noticed ni Church lust Sunday. The church was much more com¬ fortable by reason of having glass in all the windows. That our preacher has an easy de¬ livery and an unusual amount of seal. That we have more pretty young ladles than any place in Georgia. That some of our wealthiest citi¬ zens threw a nickel in the contribu¬ tion box with a consequential air, while some much poorer put in ton times as much in meekness. That one ean not tell a church member trom one who Is not by the amount given for religious proposes if last Sunday was a criterion. That some of the foremost mem¬ bers of the church (we did not say preachers) chew more tobacco and spit on tin* floor with an indifference that is simply wonderful. If you doubt it reader just notice for your¬ self. That the church needs the plant¬ ing repaired and spittoons in large numbers. At Birmingham, Ala., the other day, a feather-renovator on ripping open an old feather-bed discovered a handsome diamond ring. It was sent to the owner of tiie bed, a lady, who, on seeing it took it and held it to her lips. She then pressed an in¬ visible spring and the picture of a handsome young man tn Confeder¬ ate uniform was revealed. She said the ring was given to her by her husband before he left for the war in 1862; she ['faced it in the bed in 1863 for safe keeping, and forgot where she placed it.
