A. Tilden, a nephew of the deceased is going to risk his share. Fmagine our situation, hemmed in on every side, by thick bamboo briars and solid walls of rock, and the o ly way of escape obstructed by a hideous rattle snake,that might any moment glide down upon us. We nave read many snake stories, hut none of them were so interesting as having to contend with a real snake. We have always censured our old grand-mother Eve for submitting to the persuasion of that serpent, but we don’t now. He had the power of speech and could walk on the end of his tail, (as we read he was not condemned to go about as he does now, till he got our first parents into that fruit trouhle)whieh was enough to have scared a poor weak woman into eating anything. It may have been a good thing she ate that ap¬ ple, for had she not, it would not have been an uncommon thing to have seen snakes walking about and talking and cracking jokes with each other, which would be too much for the most of the women of our generation. “Oh mercy,” the snake :has com¬ menced slowly moving down the path. Closer! closer! His eyes are set upon us, and sparkle with a selfish delight, If he were a small one we would rush upon him and stamp his life out before he could do us any harm, but without some means of defense we are helpless iu a contest with a monster like this. He stops at the end of the path! “Is he going to speak?” “No!” he lost the power of speech at the time he was con¬ demned to crawl.” He darts out his fiery tongue, and he begins to guard the path, or make a leap. We crouch as lor away as possible, to await our doom! All the pleasures of the past and hopes for the future pass in qu'ek succession through our mind. He moves A sharp report of a gun from the rocks over head, and he is writhing in the agonies of death, less than four feet from our retreat. We are saved!
