Notwithstanding its depressions and drawbacks it seems that farming, espec ially in Schley county is after all, more profitable than most people, even the farmers themselves, imagine" There is no avocation that meets with as few ab solute failures as farming, and not many that yield a larger prefit in proportion to the- risk taken and experience required. From the tax books of Schley county for 1884 twenty-five tax payers, who do nothing but farm, were selected at rail dom as follows: 5 names that gave in from 500 to 1.000. 5 U • 4 <4 4 4 “ 1,000“ 1,500. 5 4 » 44 s 44 “ 1,500‘- 2.000. 5 44 4 * 44 “ 2,000“ 3.000. 5 <4 44 4 4 “ over 3,000. Of this number only nine gave in less in 1889 while sixteen gave in more as follows: Total amount given by the nine in 1884.......................... 22.745, Total amount given in by same nine in 1889..................... 20,410. Decrease in 5 years, above nine 2.335, Total amount given in by the other sixteen in 1884 ............ 32,286. Total amount given by same six teen in 1889 44.640. Increase in 5 years of sixteen.. .12,354. Total increase of the entire twenty-five farmers in 5 years...............10.019. This shows that farming has paid in the last five years, 4 per cent per annum including losses of the nine. Leaving off the nine losers, the 16 increasers gain nearly 8 per cent per annum, above sup port of lliit r families. Of the number that gave in less in 1889 than in 1884, two of them gave in be tween 500 and 1000, two of them between 1000 and 1.500. two of them between 1.500 and 2000 and three of over 3000. It will be noticed that all the five between 2000 and 3000 increased. EXCURSION TO CUMBERLAND. Dr. Cheney is progressing finely with the excursion to Cumberland Island. He has asked for rates from the S. A. M. and the Central railroads. The Central offers to take the excursionists to Brunswick and return for §4,40 tickets good for 15 days on any passenger train on its line. The S. A. M. has not been heard from yet, it may offer stiil better rates, though the above are v-*ry low. The steamboat fare from Brunswick to Cumberland is §1.00 each way. The Doctor thinks he can get this reduced, The Excursionists will leave Ellaville Monday June the 9th. and return within 15 days, those desiring to return sooner can do so at any time, All who wish to take advantage cf this extraordinary opportunity to have a moss delightful summer outing and visit the famous Cumberland Ialand should notify the Doctor at once. _ THE HAWKINS HOUSE. A courteous manager, polite and at tentive waiters, plenty to eat and it well served, is the making of any hotel. This the secret of the success and great pop ularity of the Haw kits House of Ameri cus, under the management of Mr. Jesse Ayecock, one of the most courteous of Southern hotel keepers. T.iose who stop with him once, go again. Last Sunday night as the Erst bound train wa8 makin * the curve in front of *' U ’ Dixon ' 8 residence the brakem .n, as u * ua1 ’ called out "ENaville!” when John Thomas Frazier, oneof our African citi— zeus returning home, imagined that the train passed the station, rushed out < m the platform and without considering the rapid-speed of the train, leaped out into the darkness. Fortunately for John Thomas, however, he lit square on his head and was saved, though the hard ground was torn up like a bomb-shell had struck it. The purchase of the Adams place, . by Mr. J. R. Williams, was confirmed last i week, by payment of §3.000 and passing j the deeds. Mr. Adams reserved this* $1,700 on the plaje T and already Mr. vr'Zn >Vil liams has been offered an advance of §800. on his bargain. Real estate around Ellavil e is tendering up want and those who do not owu home* will never find a letter time to purchase than right now. We call attention to the advert sement of A.
