Young, a Denver (Col.) boy of fifteen, has just built the smallest coal-burning locomotive in existence. It is about five feet long and weighs 235 pounds. introduced The submarine boat, into Italv recently, which is spherical in shape has thus far given greater promise of success than anything that has been ex perimented with. Miss Flora Grace, of Iowa, is the in ventor of a cooking thermometer which marks the boiling point for meat, the gently simmering altitude and the vary ing baking points for meats, bread, cake and pies. A recent contract provides for street lighting in Paris on a novel plan. Power ^distributed by the compressed air sys tem to a great number of small motors, each of which supplies current for a small number of lamps. Crushed steel—made by crushing in a gtarap-mill high-carbom steel quenched in cold water from an excessively high temperature—is being used for cutting stone. It is very hard, and cheaper and move effective than emery. Incandescent lamps placed near the oeiling will cause it to blacken, contrary to general belief. The blackening is not due to unconsumed carbon, but to a cur rent of hot air which deposits black particles on contact with a cold surface. The.aerqphor is a new inveationffrom Germany of great importance in textile factories, and is being introduced into the factories of England as tvell as Ger many. It is an apparatus to diffuse mois turenecessary for spinning without injury trhealth or machinery. Tests of aluminium bronze have been commenced at the Watertown Arsenal, Massachusetts, under the auspices of the Government. The tensile strength was shown to be over 90,000 pounds to the square inch, and the transverse strength 000 pounds on a one inch square kr. The projected new way up the Matter horn, in Switzerland, is interesting engi neers. The.rails will cease at the base •fthe “sugar-loaf” and the ascent is to be accomplished by a succession of eleva tors from one point to another, It is supposed that the work of construction will occupy about four years. An important innovation has been in troduced in the shape of a machine for preparing molds for casting. The ma chine is designed to produce a complete mold at one operation, and thus to re place skilled hand labor in making molds from pattern, plates. It is claimed that a lad can operate, the machine with the as sistance of a laborer, and is able to ram imd mold as many as 100# boxes per day. By means of an electric wire at Do meae, transmitted France, the po–’er of a ivaterfall » three and a quarter miles from its source, to a paper mill, and there utilized to the extent of two hun dred horse-power. When cold, strip off the skins, place iu a deep fish and sprinkle with sugar and serve with cream. Pumpkin Pastry. -Boil a pumpkin and mash it up. Season with pepper and salt to taste and :uld n teaspoonful cf cream. around Make a thoroughly. pudding paste to put it. Bake Cup Cake. —Two cups of Bngar, enc cup four of butter, of flour, four eggs, teaspoonfuls one cup of milk, bak cups two ing powder and one teaspoon of lemon extract. Bake iu a large flat loaf. Stowed Prunes.— Wash, drain cover with cold water, let soak several hours or over night. Stew in this water, add sugar to taste, with just enough water to cover. Fine; served very cold, with any forms of bread given, are highly nutri tous and gently laxative. Potato Soup.—Three pints of rich milk, one pint of mashed potato, two tablespoonfuls of butter, pepper aud salt to taste. Boil the milk, add the potato and boil again, stirring frequently that the potato may become thoroughly dis solved, and season just before serving. Serve very hot. Spice Cake . —One cup of brown su gar, half cup of butter, two eggs, two tablespoons of molasses, half cup of milk, one teaspoon of cinnamon, one each of cloves and allspice, half a nutmeg, one euo baking of chopped raisins, two teaspoons of quite stiff. powder and euough flour to make Crisp Cookies. —One-half pound su ga-, one-half pound flour, one-quarter pound of butter, a third of a nutmeg, three eggs. Cream the butter, add the sugar and yolks of the eggs, beat until light; stir in the stiff-beaten whites, the nutmeg and flour; flour the board, toll, cut and bake in a quick oven. Onion Soup. —Three pints of milk in which six good-sized onions have been boiled makes a delicious soup, seasoned to taste with butter, salt and pepper, thickened, if desired, with a tablespoon ful of corn starch made smooth in cold milk. Onions are much nicer boiled in milk than in water. Queen Fritters— Take one glass ©f water and two ounces of butter and put on the stove in a saucepan. When Ibis comes to the boil, add half a pound of flour and stir till stiff. Take off the fire and add six raw eggs separately, beating each one ns added till a soft dough re sults, then fry in lard iu pieces the size of a walnut. Crab Apple Jeli.y.— Wash Sibe rian crab app es, quarter, but do not core, put in a kettle, and cover with cold water; cook until soft. Strain twice through a jelly bag. Put the juice on and boil twenty-five minutes. Add a pound of sugar to every pint of juice, with the juice ©f one lemon. Boil until it jellies. IIickory-nut Layer Cake.—O ne cup of sugar, half a cup of butter, half a cup of milk, two cups of flour, two eges, two teaspoons of baking powder and a cup of chopped raisins stirred in last. Bake in lay ers and ice wiih boiled icing which has bad a cup of chopped raisins stirred in. This is an excellent recipe for company. Cream Chocolates. — One quart of granulated sugar, half a pint < f boiling water, half a pound of baker’s chocolate. Pour the water on the sugar, mix well, and leave it to boil ten minutes without stirring. Place the saucepan in the cold water, and stir briskly until it becomes stiff enough to handle. Mold it in little balls and put aside to cool. Break the chocolate in small pieces and put it in a bowl in the top of a boiling tea kettle.
