Which will it lie in this county big
cotton crops and low prices or less cotton
and better prices?

Our streets dry off very quickly after
wet spells and the town looks as neat and
clean as a new pin.
Ellaville people have confidence in the
future of their town and its bound to
continue building up.
We are glad to know that Mr. L’ght
ner who was considered dangerously ill
last week, is much improved.
Misses Swint and Ingram have fitted
up a millinery and dress making estab
lishment in the Scovill house.
The sight of straw ha's and muslin dress
goods displayed on the shelves of ot r
stores is enough to give one a chill this
cold weather.
The committee appointed for collect
ing money to pay for the new organ lias
succeeded in raising the whole amount
Dr. Smith purchased the old organ.
Mr. McLaughiein of Atlanta is very
anxious to move his family to Ellaville
and will buy a home here if he can secure
one at anything like a reasonable price.
While some of the peach trees were in
jured by the cold wave that struck us
last Sunday we believe there will he a
very good crop of fruit from trees that
were late in blooming.
Mr. Charlie McOrory has improved his
pretty flower garden by putting a bordet
ot oncic ana sneijs arouna the oeos. A
well kept flower yard full of sweet blos
soms is “a thing of beauty and a joy for
ever.”
Mrs, Burton has secured enough mon
ey to purchase carpeting for the chance!
and isles of the methodist church. Tills
has been put down and presents quite a
nice appearance and will make the
church more, comfortable.
The Americus daily pdpers have sus
pended publication until the city council
comes to terms and furnishes ater with
which to run their presses at a reasonable
price. We hope this matter will soon be
adjusted for we miss their bright sheets,
There is much food for thought in the
following from the Fort Gaines Chroni
A newspaper hasn't the heart to blow
a town when the people, of a town haven’t
public spirit enough to keep the editor
off the pauper list.
The recent ram* have left the road
from Buena Vista to Columbus in a very
had condition accidents are becoming so
frequent as to render it very danger*>us
to travel. The freight train ran off attain
last Thursday’ causing considerable delay
but fortunately’ no one was seriously
hurt.
Those who contemplate building
should have an eye to the beauty as well
as (he utility’ of their homes. It costs
no more to build a new style house than
it does to put up an old fashioned one,
modern houses a,re good advertisements
for a town, They iudi ate a progressive
spirit.
Mr. J. B. Williamson the live grocery
man believes in j l inters ink. His trade
increases daily because he always keeps
on hand first-class goods and lets the
people know it through the columns of
his county paper. He has received sev
eral orders from Buena Vista for groce
ries because they can he bougnt cheaper
here.
A series of meetings will commence nt
the Methodist church on Sunday next
continuing through the week.
To say that the meetings will be con
ducted by Mr. Thrower is sufficient for
those who have heard his eloquent and
logical talks to conclude that they will
be interesting.
Rev. J. B. Johnson of Americus will
assist Mr. Thrower in the meetings. You
are cordially invited t* attend.
SCHLEY COUNTY NEWS.
DO YOU ADVERTISE!
Did you ever know a town to prosper
that was not advertised?
Have you ever heard of a town failing
to prosper that was advertised?
Did you ever hear a merchant
say that he had lost by advertising?
Did you ever know a merchant who ad
vertised fail to have a trade?
Is your local paper not considered an
advertisement of your town? Are not
the advertisements of your goods, news
to the majority of the readers of
your local paper ? Can a .paper ad
vertise you and your town always
for nothing? Does not advertising help
your paper? When you help your paper
are you not helping your town? Then
why don’t you advertise? Why?
DON’T WORRY.
Early planting does not insure good
crops, neither does late planting necessa
rily make poor ones. Knowing nothing of
the future we cannot tell what is best hut
we have this injunction. ..In the morn
ing sow thy seed md i i the evening hol l
not thy hand for thou knowestnot which
shall prosper” but we do know that to be
always complaining and looking on the
dark side will not help matters at all
while if we go to work with a cheerful
spirit determined to do our very best we
may accomplish great things. We have
no reason to doubt that the efforts of the
farmers will lie rewarded with an abun
dant harvest in the Autumn if they do
their duty.
WILL MOVE TO ELLAVILLE.
Mr. John Kleeklv will soon begin the
erection of a handsome residence. Ella
ville is to he congratulated upon securing
such a good citizen, particularly as he
was offered special inducements to locate,
elsewhere. But Mr. Kleckly like agreat
many othei siias found out that Ellaville
is the garden spot of this country and
steadily growing into a prosperous town.
One of our sweetest young ladies who
lives just a short distance from town was
exrecting her best fellow iast Sunday
and had everything in “apple pie order”
but the continued rains caused the par
or chimney to fall, and it being too cold
to sit without fire they had to spend the
evening with the old folks, much to the
discomfiture of the young ^man who in
his present state of mind thinks that two
is company ami three is a great big
crowd,’ • He will be certain that spring
has come to stay before he again
his fancy lightly turn to thoughts of
love.”
From the quantity of guano lieing
hauled fr ail the depot it seems that the
farmers are paying no heed to the advice
of prominent leaders in the alliance who
are urging them to plant less cot’on. We
fear they are making a great mistake for
in all probability if- will be the same as
last year after the trouble of making a
large crop some of it will have to remain
in the field for want of hands to gather
it. Experience is a dear teacher and
even that sometimes fails to impress a
lesson.
The doctors in town h ive been treat
ing patients in the county who are suffer
ing with catalepsy a very uncommon
disease. Mr. G. id. Hays has a child very
strangely affected and in a very preca
rious condition. Dr. McMichael’s little
girl who has been quite ill for several
weeks at times seems to be in a comatose
state. Dr. R. T. Bivins who was called
in to consult with the physicians, reports
iier improving.
As it seems to do no good we dislike
very much to be compelled to make an
other complaint about the mail arrange
ment. but when’people subscribe for a
p iper they generally want to get it the
week its published. The papers which
left this place for Murray’s X Roads Fri
day morning have never reached that
place. We would like to know who is to
blame for this gross carelessness,
A very important case is being tried to
day T in the conrt of chancery presided
over by Judge Fish of Oglethorpe. It is
the old case of Eason vs. Sellars which
involves a lauded estate valued at $21,000
dollars. Beside the local bar (lie follow
ing attorneys Americus from are in
attendance Hollis, Hawkins, llinton,
Butt and Lumpkin.
We know of seven or eight residences
to lie built in Ellaville right soon.
While we make no boast of a great
boom this looks like our town
mg don’t it?.
No mushroom growth, hut a steady
substantial up building is what we claim
will give us Hie best town in Georgia.
