••Why lookest thou aad the young man said. As he saw the reporters face. dust lake my job and you’ll look mad For locals are painfully scace.” Capt. Peacock is having his barn en larged Green plums are ripe, Girls are happy The school at Andrew Chapel closed Friday. --- — --——----- A great deal of lumber is being shipped to Ellaville. Several children in town are suffering from sore eyes. Wild straw berries are in the market, They sell for twenty cents per quart. County schools are closing. Many °f the children having to work on the tai m. Did you ever play a game ot croquet? It will not cost you anything to learn in Ellaville. The prayer meeting was changed for this week from Wednesday to Tuesday night. Mr. Peacock is constantly making im provements about the hotel. He is hav ing a commodious barn built. A number of ladies and gentlemen from the Hopewell neighborhood enjoy ed a fish fry at Buck creek Saturday. Mr. Everett of Ft.Valley has lieenship ping straw berries to Efiavile this week and they sold rapidly for 20cts. a quart. The price of sugar is going down and black berries are almost ripe In spite of the drouth we have much for which to be thankful. The favorite amusement of the school gills is going in search or green plums. It is feared that rot one will be left on the trees to ripen. The carpenter’s work on the Eliernee zer church being about completed it is now being touched up by the painters brush wedded by Mr. Alec Dudley. A negro boy was kicked on the head while fooling too near the beets of a stub born mule this week. The mule is lame but will recover. The boy is not injured. The second quarterly meeting for this circuit will be held at Andrew Chapel next Saturday. It will he held only one day as the Presiding Elder Mr. McGeehee has an engagement else where for Sun - flay. Mr. A. 0. Murray is having his beau tiful suburban home nicely painted. Everything about the place wears an air of n- atness and thrift. The land sur rounding his home is in a high state of cultivation and is one of the most valua ble farms in the state. The Schley and Marion count y Alii ances have concluded to meet at Knowl ton’s springs July 2nd. tor a picnic and barbecue. Mario i and Schley are two of the most prosperous counties in the 8tate and to say they are arranging two months beforehand is sufficient that it will be a grand success. Messrs Kleekly and Mott are putting the lumber in place this week for some of tne new residences that are to be built s< >on. Ellavil e will have several new dwelling houses soon, made of Schley county timber, prepared by Seldey coun ty carpenters ami occupied by Schley county’s solid energetic people. This may be called home industry. Though it seems unreasonable we cer tainly had frnt-t last week. samples of corn from Mr. G, W. C. Monro's planta tion are all withered. The field of corn so badly injured bad just bee n plowed and that accounts for the damage. Tlie outlook is anything, but promising, though the bud may sprout again and make a crop. Truly tlie farmers have had much to discourage them this season. Mr. C. R, Tondee killed 17(5 rats in one Right last week with the simple remedy °f placing a barrel, filled with water cov ered over with bran, in his barn, Mr. Tondee says that they had become so nu merous that they would go into his smokehouse and eat bis hams, or to his dwelling and carry off whole garments, but he has almost extinguished them with this simple remedy. SCHLEY COUNTY NEWS. PROF, CH VS, LANE. Prof, Lane addressed a large and ap preeialive audience at Buena \ ista Sat in.lav night on the “science of laughing. ” In introducing the Speaker Col. Butt made this remark. “For any one to. acknowledge that they have never heard of Charlie Lane is an admission that they are far behind the times," Mr. Lane is not prepossessing in appearance and in an ordinary crowd would attract no attention, but when before an audience his eyes (airly sparkle, and his keen wit is simply irresistablq. He captured his line audience at the beginning and charmed all by his inimitable style. Be sides the rich humor vs inch seems to bubble up spontaneously his remarkable address contains many literary gems which show careful thought and histori cal research. By his magnetism he swa xed F e crowd and peal after peal ol hearty uproarious laughter showed that dignity for the time was laid aside and cares forgotten. To one that lias been so fortunate as to hear this lecture the memory of his fine jokes and comical ex pression will always provoke a hearty laugh. Beside the ecture it was our good fortune to enjoy the hospitality of Bue na Vista’s clever wholesouled people which in itselt was a rare treat. It was altogether, a most delightful occasion and will be remembered with pleasure by the Ellaville visitors. VERY NEAR AN ACCIDENT, Lord Meadows came very near having a serious accident on Tuesday evening. While trying to hold a wild mule his feet became entangled in the lines, throwing him flat on the ground. The mule became frightened and ran off at a fearful speed dragging Lord after him. Mr. Eugene Thrower who was passing succeeded in capturing the mule and rescueing Lord Meadows. It was « narrow escape, and Had it not been for tlie prompt action of Mr. Thrower he would probably have been badly injured, He is considerably bruised, but fortu nately no bones are broken, and none of his bruises serious. Any one traveling over this county would be be surprised at the very excel lent manner in which the farmers are carrying on their work.. The dry spell has given them plenty of time to get the crops perfectly clean. The fences are re paired and in good condition. Every flung about then- homes isueat and com fortable, which is surely the best evi dence of the thrift that always follows industry, economy and intelligent plan ning. Schley county, people are prover bially happy and contented and its all because they have pleasant homes and are perfectly independent ,.f the outside world. T he pi el tiest residences in this county are away trom any town,' where in the midst of magnificent farms well stocked with sleek cattle, the owner can feel "I am monarch of all J survey.” The pride of our county is her intelligent farmers her goou country schools and churches. ,f, lie BuenaVista Brick Company has been shipping carloa !s of hriek to Eila vide tor the new residences that are go ing up. That much money is go ing out of the county for something that could be made right here at home. Brick made by the Buena Vista com pany are of a superior quallity, but they can be made here just as good and at much less cost to the purchaser. Why don't somebody go to work and arrange to rean the rich harvest that would arise from a well equipped brick yard. We hope by fall, at least that Ellaville will he manufacturing brick enough to supply the increasing demand. Let some enter prising man sit down and think over the matter just ten minutes and lie will be convinced that its a paying business. A mad dog tearing around the streets of Ellaviiie a few days ago frightened some of the meichants “out of a years growth.” In giving the rounds he paid his respects to tlie Planter's Bank and Mr. Clark prom] tly gave his dogship ilie freedom of the building while he beat a hasty retreat to the vault. B- fore you could say “Jaik Robinson” the dog was out ot the l ank and into Cheney's drug store, but just as lie reached the top step Mr. Allen had the presence of mind t<i shove the door which knocked him beck into the street. He ran several mi es out into the country where he was killed I v Mr. Homer Threldkeld. The farmers come to town quit 0 often now. It is so dry they can't do farm work. A good many are becoming dis couraged at the state of affairs, but some are spending the time very pleasantly on the ceeebs fishing. One of our young men has been offer ed four hundred d< llius for his horse and buggy which lie promptly refused be he knows there is notanothe. ho s i this country as good as his. AT OCHILLEE. Last Friday was a most enjoyable day for those who attended the picnic nt Ochillee. TheEUaville Sunday schools had been invited by Buena Vista to pic nic with them. Our crowd was not as large as hadlheenexpected, but the bright faces and pleasant smiles of those who boarded the train at Ellavilleshowed that they anticipated a happy day. and they lu d it. BuenaVista turned out 150 bright chil dren, pretty girls, genteel young men and pleasant older men and women, who with their generous hospitality and soci ability entertained the Ellavillians in a maimer characteristic of southerners, which made every one feel that it was good to be there. Buena Vista’s kind ness will long be remembered by the El laville Sunday schools. Ochillee is a moat beautiful place for picnics, the lovely stream, beautiful .shades and high rocky cliffs enterwoven with wild flowers of every description, makes a scene very enchanting.
