In a sermon oti Sunday night last at St. Mark’s Protestant Episcopal church in NewYork, Rev, Dr. Rylance, a prom inent clergyman. paid a high tribute to the moral influence of newspapers. The reading of newspapers, he said, could never constitute education in its best sense, but when it followed a thorough school education it was the highest edu cator. The living world was the best school, and into this the newspapers led its leaders. It went everywhere—the art of leading being common. It was largely due to this that the advanced and broad-minded views of life prevail ed so much among the American people. It had created a feeling of brotherhood among nations, The exchange of newspapers the world ovei had promote ! the cause of international peace, The newspapers had generally been a preach er of peace. Newspaper men were gen erally liberal, Dr. Rylance said. As a rule they were far in advance of the p< 1 » ticians in decrying the needs of the timer. It was the newspapers mainly that bad popular government successful. The newspaper went where speeches could not. It kept men informed upon thebest literature of the day; it made known the researches of science: it ad reunited ( needed social reforms: it pleaded the-cause of the weak and the oppressed; it was the best auxiliary of the courts of law. and was more feared than all the anathemas of the church,—Enquirer Sun.
