The disbursements of the state treas ury for the first quarter of 1897 will ex - veed $1,000,000. ____..____ .._— It was cold enough in Atlanta last week to freeze gas. Just suppose the legislature had fieen in session. It will hardly be possible for Yancey Carter to take the place of Watson in the hearts of Georgia populists. We are indebted to Congressman Charle It Crisp and Senator A O Bacon for valuable public documents. Mrs Felton and Bill Arp are engaged in a controversy, and its dollars to doughnuts that Mis Felton will have the last word. Hon Mark Everett, of Stewart countv, represented the Third district as a dele gate to the good roads convention heid at Orlando, Fla. last week. A good many people will join Editor Christopher in the wish "that it could be ten years l>efore we have another political year.” Theie is nothing more demoralizing than modern politics. Marion county farmers who grew long staple cotton last season, are not pleased with the experiment, and it will be some time before they plant any more of that variety of the fleecy staple. It is already announced that the shirt waist will lie worn as much as ever this summer. The man or woman who in troduced this sensible and popular style deserves a lasting monument. The Macon Telegraph ha« discovered that that there is something radically wrong about our system of assessing property in Georgia. and compiles some interesting facts from the report of the comptroller general. Eighty three conn ties in the state returned for taxation 722.205 fewer acres of land in 1896 than they did in 1895: riftv one counties re turned 480.154 more, notone returned the same number of acres for the two years. The value of the land returned in 1895. and which was not relumed in ]H96 was in round nnmbeia $2.400,000 an j would have paid ill taxes between $25,000 and $80,000. Schley is one of the eighty three counties which shows a decrease in acreage. In 1895 the number ot acres in tl,e county returned for taxa tion was 105,020. while the digest for 1896 shows only 102,821—a loss of 2,205 acres. The question is, why are not these acres of land on the tax books? The legislature could take up nothing for consideration, that is of more impor tance to the state than this matter of tixation. Young Charles Crisp is being deserved ly complimented on the modesty and good taste he displays in his autobiogra phy which appeals in the latest edition of the Congressional Directory. He has less to say than any other member of congress, giving only this accunt of him self: “Charles R Crisp, of Americus, was born in Eilaville, Schley county. Ga., October 19. 1870, is a lawyer by profes sion, Iteing the junior member of the firm of Hooper – Crisp; was elected to the fifty fourth congress as a Democrat without opposition, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father, the Hon Charles F Crisp.—Atlanta Journal. The Monroe Advertiser correctly sizes up a character, well known to all news paper tolks, in the following: “About the meanest man we know of is the man who owes two or three years for his paper and notifies the postmaster that he will not take it from the office any longer, and then goes around howl ing about the*worthles*ness of the sheet and how he has stopped it because it was no good.’* MAKVF.LOU8 RESULTS.
