Tax Reciever Wall chIIb our attention to the fact that a mistake was made in the Macon Telegraphs table, from which we quoted last week, in regard to the number of acres of land returned for taxation from Schley county last year, Instead of a decrease in acreage, there Was a gain of 811 acres, The di gest for 1895 shows only 105.020 acres, while the digest for 1890 has 105,887 ocres. We are glad to make the cor rectioii, for it is certainly better to know that we are gaining, than to feel that our county is like the old darkie-s fish ••swunk up.” An examination of the digest, however, will show that the taxes have been returned very irregularly for the past few years, but Mr Wall has been vigilant in discharging the duties of his office and we congratulate him on the increase in taxable property. The best and most civilized people in the world approve the international arbi tration treaty, and let us hope that the American congress will be able to see it in the same light.—Florida TimesUnion. ♦4 Charlie Crisp made his maiden speech Thursday. It was on a bill to increase the pension of Mrs Elizabeth Willons, the u idow of a Georgia veteran of the Mexican war, fiom $18 to $80 a month. Mr Crisp got bis bit I through the house committee of the whole, and spoke on it making a tine impression. The iiouse passed the bill after hearing Mr Crisp's speech. A rich gold and copper mine is report ed by the Gainesville Eagle to have been discovered on the property of Genera! Longstreet near that town. Tne vein va ries in width from 8 inches to two feet and the ore is said to be worth from $7 to $12 per ton. Judge Z A Littlejohn is fuily sustain ing the expectation of his friends as judge of the southwestern circuit, and this is saying a great deal. The crying need of Georgia at present is a reformatory for youthful criminals. It is a *hame and a disgrace to any civi lized community for children to be thrust into prisons and jails, there coin ing into contact with the contaminating influence of hardened criminals: when a few thousand dollars spent in a reforma ton building would rescue f rom ruin hundreds of thoughtless children: who in their present helpless condition are being led straight toward the gates of the penitentiary.—Jackson Times.
