YllMNo PUB miOSPKUlTV <>K BOH LEY COUNTY. Ellaville, G*i., Thursday \Tornim?, Octal nr 14th 18S7 THE CONDI FUN OF CROPS. COTTON. Since my last report of Sept. 1, diaan ter has overtaken this crop all over the Btate. Ilust and shedding and drouth have done their work, aided in some counties by caterpillars, and I think it a fair statement to say that the prospec tive yield is 26 per rent off from what it promised to be a mouth ago. I have beeu in all sections of the state during September, I have observed the crop closely myself, and I have talked with experienced farmers from many coun ties, and I venture the assertion that Georgia will m ake no more cotton than she did last year. In addition to this disaster, the price has declined more than a cent a pound in tiie same time, and our farmers are now face to face with a small crop and the price in most cases below the cost of production. The | crop is farms being where rapidly gathered appeared, and early ou many rust | picking is practically over. Snoutd good weather continue for a few weeks longer the crop wul all be gathered, as there is very luile top crop anywhere iu the state. COHN. Fortunately this crop is good, pener eraiiy, though a few counties report ; Bhort 0,1 accim,, * of local niourh. it is fortunate that our farmers will have but. little coru to buy, for there will he hltia or IIO nw „ ey left iu their handa from the sale of their cotton. I advise every far me. to save his coru carefully ana allow m>n« of it to be war, ted, for promises to be higher iu price next year than it lias beeu for a year or two past. OTHER CROrS. Rice is reported good from the coast counties, where the buik of the crop is raised, and no severe storm having oc curred in September most of it is now ! safely harvested. Sorghum and sugar | cane have maue fair crops, though the latter has been retarded in growth by I dry weather in the early summer. The i crop of peas is good and th ey should be j gathered in spue m pressing de mands of the open cotton. Peas sold this year in Atlanta from $1 to $1.25 a bushel, and every fanner that has them should at least save his seed, if no more. A great deal of fine fodder i ami hay has been cured and housed, and this good work should still go ou wherever rains have kept the grass green and nutritious. i Groundpeas and sweet potatoes are an average crop, aud will go a long wavs towards fattening the killing hogs, particularly in South Georgia, where groundpeas are largely planted for this purpose. BTOCK Are generally reported healthy and 1 60. than usual. Baud V«toli. Question.—I tried a small plat in ■aud vetch as an experiment, but it spread so close to the ground that I am I convinced on a large scale it would be an exceedingly difficult crop to gather. I believe it is as valuable as onmson clover, as a winter crop it is better adapted to dry soil, and if this difficulty can be overcome it will become one of our most valuable crops. Oau you sug gest a plan for successfully saving it? Answer.— It has been found that if vetch is seeded with wheat or rye, the latter will hold It up, and prevent it . from spreading so close to the ground, It is richer in albuminoids than clover and stands the winter equally as well * but it should be cut before it becomes too woody. —State Agricultural Depart ment. Canada Pea*. Question.—C an you tell me some* thing of the cultivation and habits of the Canada pea? I have heard that they will grow through the winter and be ready to cut for hay by the middle of spring. Are they considered good feed for stock? Answer.— We have as yet had at the south very few experiments with the Canada pea. The hay Is known to be a very fine feed for cows and sheep, as it is rich in proteine. It has been sug gested that the crop be sown in October on land of average fertility. Plow and work flue, then sow the peas at the rate of two bushels to the acre. They should be covered deep, at least 4 or 5 inches. If the peas are killed down by severe cold thev y will come up again and be ready , for cutting about May. A good plan is to sow these peas and oats on the same land. First plow in the peas to the depth of 4 or 5 inches, about a bushel to the acre, then harrow in the oats, about the same quantity of seed. The crops will mature together and the hay be much finer than oats alone, the proteine in the peas making a well bal anced ration and a good substitute for •ottouseed meal or hran.-*-State rfc.
