CHARGED with receiving sto len GOODS FROM THIEVES. TIO SRF. MEMBERS OF COUNCIL. Whitfield County, fia., Grand Jury Re turns Manv True Bill* Against Gang of Car Bobbers. Dalton, Ga., is in the throes of a great sensation. The Whitfield county grand jury has found thirteen indictments against Walter Bohannon and his gang of car robbers, ten indictments against half a dozen merchants for receiving stolen goods; and it is still taking evidence. Bohannon, the notorious leader of the worst band of robbers since John A. Murrill’s days, has weakened and his companions in crime are thor oughly demoralized. The members of the gang now in jail are: Walter Bohannon, Ben Pearce, Sam Painter, Tom Rinneman, Ed Mor ris, colored; Bill Long, Ralph Ellison. Out on bond are: Anthony Cook and Charley Hill, two negro draymen; Luke White and Jim Harris. The merchants who were arrested for receiving stolen goods and who gave bond are: John Bender, member of council; Drew M. Peoples, member of conncil; T. N. Peeples, Jr., G. M. Cannon aud Anderson Giddings. As to the guilt of the actual mem bers of the robber gang there is not the shadow' of a doubt. They realize this, and it would not surprise any cue if every outlaw in the band pleads guilty and takes his sentence without a murmur. Some of the indicted merchants de clare that they are innocent of crime and say they will fight prosecution to the finish. For some time gossip ran wild and many an innocent man’s reputation has suffered, but when the trials are over there will be no trouble about distinguishing the honest merchants from the dishonest. The five merchants under bond are among the most prominent business men in Dalton. Bonds Lost 8>IOO.OOO. The band of car-breakers has been operating for twelve years. The South ern railway has paid out nearly $50, 000 in claims for stolen goods and the old East Tennessee, Virginia and Geor gia lost every bit as much. Probably no railroad has ever been preyed upon so long and disastrously as the Southern and its predecessor have suffered. Detectives have been at Dalton off and nuaoa fr>r lor TOQT-a years +rsrinor tiymg to fprr^t lerret (vii out : the mysterv. They found that Walter ] Bohannon haniion ^,-oa was r,T„hal,Iv probably tho the leader, but | 0(1 ,L r i. n t they ^ could never catch him iu the act, nor could they find sufficient evidence against him to convict until a short timo ume ago. om MORGAN TALKS TO HATt’AIIANS. At any rate, yrior to his departure the matter had been taken entirely out of his hands. ihe decision of the lower court in the case of the steamship China has been affirmed. An Old Cow Town. It was one of the jests of the later \V est to ask a man, “What was your name back in the States?" but this was never seriously done in the cow coun try of the early times, because it might have been one of the thlngB one would rather have left unsaid, Too much personal curiosity was not good form, and met with many discouragements. In short, the cow- town of the good old times was a gathering of men of most heterogeneous sorts, a mass of particles which could not mix or blend. Of types there were abundance, for each man was a study of himself. He had lived alone, forced to defend him self and to support himself under the most varying and trying circum stances, very often cut off from all manner of human aid or companion ship for months at a time. Needing his self-reliance, his self-reliance grew. Forced to be independent, his inde pendence grew. Many of these men had been crowded out of the herd in the States, and had so wandered far away from the original pastures of their fellews. They met in the great and kindly country of the old West a number of these rogues of the herd, and it was a rough sort of herd they made up among themselves. They could not blend; not until again the sweep of the original herd had caught up with them, and perforce taken them in again among its numbers. Then, as they saw the inevitable, as they saw the old West gone forever, leaving no place whither they might wander fur ther, they turned their hands to the ways of civilization and did as best they could. In many cases they became quiet and useful and diligent citizens, who to day resent the raking up of the gro tesque features of their past, and have a contempt for the men who try to write about that past with feigned wis dom and unfeigned sensationalism,— The Chaut' , " fi, inn.
