An extraordinary story comes from New York. A policy holder in New York Life Insurance Com pany had been sentenced to death. Rather than carry the risk on the sentenced man the company settled the claim, which was for several thousand dollars, some days prior to the date set for the execution. This feature was a most interesting one, but it paled into insignificance beside the other feature which was that the convicted man appealed for a new trial, got it and was acquitted.* Every campaign brings forth a batch of political novels advocating all sorts of wild theories in the guise of romance. Mr. With ers advises all who are unmarried (to marry at once, His idea i6 that ithey will be straighter in their dealings if they are married. In fact, as the story goes, the banker provides the girls for the cashiers ito choose from, he arranges picnics *tnd excursions for them so that they may become acquainted and goes even further, does this yigilant hanker, and offers five hundred dollars a– a bonus for each mar riage. Banker Witham is quoted as saying : A married man is more .eligible to a position of trust than ■p. single man. A man who has a wife and baby is not so likely to run away as a single man. To marry the cashiers off I invite a number of what I call ‘sponsors, 5 young ladies of the best southern families, to join our excursion parties. A large crowd, beside the large number of pupils and parents connected with the school, were present. No set programme was presented, and yet the exercises were all interesting and instructive. No comment is needed as to the dinner, as it goes without saying that this old and honored community stands in the front rank in this particular. Everybody had plenty and to spare and the large crowd fully enjoyed it.
