U n Mr. Earnest Livingston has been spending a few days with home folks this week. a Mr. Sid Hayes, of Shellman, was shaking hands with friends in Ella © * The farmers around Ellaville re port tho prospect of the cotton crop as not encouraging. Judge Taylor tied the hymenal knot for a coupla of dusky lovers last Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gaines, of Oglethorpe, are visiting Maj. E. S. Baldwin, father of Mrs. Gaines. Owing to the absence of the editor, and other unavoidable delay, the paper is delayed one day this week. The rain of today has again re tarded farming operations, and some are in danger of “getting in the grass.” 4 Quite a favorite place of resort is to see the railroad machine dig and .load cars to fill the trestles on the road near town. Miss Nan Caldwell, of La Crosse, made a Dying trip to Buena Vista Monday, and returned Wednesday. Misses Annie Lumkin, Nellie Lumpkin and Lillie Payne paid our office a visit Wednesday morn ing. We are always charmed to have the Misses call on us. Messrs. Clark Duncan, Gordon Lowe, and George Walton, of Buena Visa, were the guests of Mr. Harry Peacock, Wednesday night. Solicitors for consignments of peaches have been guite numerous with*us this week. Some few who wanted to buy outright, have also been among «s. Miss^p Carleton Engrain, of Eufaula, Ala., and Miss Claude Gibson, of Montesuma, are guests, this week,of Miss Julia*Peacock 'at the home of Mr. T. A. Collins. The candidate is, as usual, busy shaking hands. He is attending the usual picnics, barbeues, etc. Success, to you, gentleman, and may the best man win. Rev. W. A. Huckabee, of McRae, is expected the latter part of the week, to engage in the pro tracted meeting now being con ducted by the pastor at the Methodist church. A protracted menting has been going on at the Methodist church for some days, though it seems not to be generally known. Beginning with the week of prayer last week, the pastor continued into the pres ent week. While the congregations have not been large, they have been attentive, and we trust good is being done. Mr. M. D. Herring, from the Ebenezer community of Schley county, presents himself in another column, as a candidate for the office of Clerk Superior Court. Mr. Her rmg makes a very gallant offer to divide the emoluments of the office, if elected, with the widow of the late nominee. Besides this, the peo ple could not had a better man. The Sunday school at Andrew Lhapel will picnic Friday, 13th •nst., at the grove near the resi dence of Mr. J. C. Strange. This announcment, without futher invi tation, would be sufficient to insure a laage attendence, for so well known is the hospitality and gener ous welcome of this people, that no °ne would hesitate to go; but all are cordially invited to be present, and take in the festivities of the occasion. We are not informed as t° whether there will be any pro g r an)nie of exercises. IN riEMORIAn. Death has again visited the community and taken one of its brightest jewels. On Wednesday evening June 37th at half past eight o’clock at the home of Mrs. G. W. Tison the pure spirit of Ed Cheney winged its. flight to Heaven. Ed’s death was sureh a sad blow to th£ community and to all who knew him. He had won manv friends in life and- was a true j of noble manhood. Ed has been in feeble health for some time but none thought the was so near. All that a loving wife, father, mother, brother and sisters with other loved ones and friends could do was of no avail. God had said come up higher. Several years ago his dear mother passed to the great beyond and he so often expressed a desire to see her during his sickness. Ed was sick but a short while and bore his sickness with patience and said he feared not death. His remains were interred at the Ellavtille Cemetery. The funeral services were conducted very im pressively by Rev. R. F. William son and D. D. Batem;tii. Pall bearers were J. R. Williams, J. F. Stewart, T. B. Rainey. W. H. Collins, C. H. Wall, L. E. Tondee and H. J. Williams. Ed was born Dec. 26th 1866 merried Miss Florence Tison Dec. 1896. He leaves a devoted wife and two bright little children one girl and a boy, to whom he was very devotod and no children ever loved papa better. Ah, sad is the lot of little children to whom the name of father is to them a sad sweet memoy. Ed joined the church at a very early age and has always been a good boy and we deeply feel our loss but we know tis heavens gain. Then if .we feel sad dened what must it be for his com panion and may she look up amid her tears and say, Thy will and not mine be done. 1 have known Ed for several years and I am glad I had that privilage and to his be loved wife whom I have known and loved from childhood and to his other friends and loved ones, I tender my sincere sympathy, and point them to the lanb of God who alone can Comfort and heal, and may God’s spirit guide comfort and lead you dear Florence until the final day when God shah gather up his jewels apid you shall meet Fd where there will be no more limning. On last Friday mornieg, at about 7 o’clock, Mr. John M. Thornton, one of Elltfville’s oldest and most respected citizens, passed from the labors of this life to the rest of the beyond. Perhaps no man more universally liked ever lived among us, and the many expressions of regard as to his life and character build for him a monument more beautiful than the work of hands. He was sick about one week, suf fering with pneumonia, His remains were interea at the ceme tery at Ellaville Saturday morning, attended by a large concourse of citizens. The funeral was from the Baptist church, of which he was an honored member. The exercises were conducted by Rev6. Sanborn, of the Baptist, and Bateman, of the Methodist churches. Mr. Isaac Hart, another of our old and honored citizens, passed away last Monday night at about 12 o’clock, at his home, near Friendship. He was in his 71st year,—a ripe old age, but ready for the harvester. He, too, was a mem ber in high regard, of the Baptist ceurch, and the funeral exercises were conducted by Rev. R. B. Taylor at Quebec, last Tuesday morning. One by one, sometimes rapidly, the old guard is passing over to “fall in” the ranks of the redeemed soldiers of the cross on the plains of Heaven. We lament the separa tion, but we know that our loss is their gain. To both families be reaved we extend our sympathies and condolence. Talking In Church. The worst of all kind of sounds in church is that of human voices not engaged in the service; worst in moral trasgression. Even religous conversation is profanity. Com ments on the service itself, if favorable and friendly, are imperti nent; if critical, are disgraceful; if comical and calculated to pro ■'i voke laughter, are infamous. For all mutual communications that appear to be neccessary a sufficient forethought would in most in stances obviate the necessity. If those who whisper would think first they would commonly see that no serious harm would come to keeping still till after the service. The insult lies against the author ities of the church, against the congregation.. A> whisper reaches farther than the whisperer imagines And whenever it reaches it may rightly stir up indignation. It is a form of ill manners tlfe deplorable because it is scarcely capable of rebuke or suppression by any other means than a general sense of good behavior and a right education. The above is clipped from the Montezuma Record. We do not know how it is over that way, but the item would fit in at least one other place we know, and we en dorse every word of it. Mr6. R. J. Perry and infant boy, and M?s. Wm. McGarrah and Mrs. W. A. Perry, all of the Andrew Chapel community, and who have been quite sick, are now reported better. Their many friends will be glad to know of their improvement. A GOOD COUGH MEDICINE. Many thousands have been restor ed to health and happiness by the use of Chamberlain’s Cough Reme dy.
