'Hie primary election to nominate
a candidate for the office of Clerk
Superior Court, and a candidate
tor representative in the legislative,
will be held by the democratic
party of Schley county next Satur
day, under the same regulations as
prevailed in the nomination iit
May. This additional election was
made necessary by the tie which
resulted in no choice of a candidate
for representative and the death of
Mr. YY\ E. Cheney, whose death
occurred before his party had op
portunity to elect him to the of
fice his friends had proposed to
give him. It no wise affects any of
the other nominees, and there is no
room for the projection of any
bitterness into the campaign, which
has been short, and as fur as we
know, pleasant. The people may
he depended on to get the best
man, and the Nkws only regrets
that there is not a place for all the
clever gentlemen who are running.

"SteadOil cock-talk, ,, which flowed , «
ree jr t rong t e infested orchards last
winter, in spite of the high price of tKii
oily article. The continuous rains of th<
past month, howovev, havo greatly re
tarded the multiplications of the San
Joso scale and millions of the little crt»
tures have beeu brought forth into ex
istence only to be quickly washed from
tho trees and drowned. Meanwhile th<
mothers, apparently realizing the pori)
of their newly born young have decreas
ed their daily quota of new lives and re
linquished for a space their claim to th«
most prolific animals in existence. The
estimate of 3 , 219 ,OhO ,400 insects as th*
annual descendants 'from one individual
fomalo will fall far short this season,
thanks to the rains; “it is an ill wind
that blows good to no one." Butunfor
tnnatelv , , those ., rains . , havo come at
a
season when the fruit crop is at its vul
nerable poi at, and lot among tho peaches,
induced by the damp weather, is doing
considerable damage.
Now that the fruit crop is being rap
idly removed from tho trees, it behoove*
every man who owns premises infested
with the San Joso scale to prepare for a
Bummcr treatment. As soon as the fruit
crop is gathered infested trees should b«
sp „ yw , with 10 [K . r Mnt , t „ r0K1M „
mechanical mixture with water. Of the
two kerosene pumps now on the market,
one made by the Doming Co., Salem,
Ohio, tho other by the Goulds Mfg. Co.,
Seneca Falls, N. Y., the latter is more
reliable and tho writer recommends it in
pre f er ence to the former,
Particular care should be taken in th«
use of kerosane as a summer wash, a*
there is always more or less danger of
injury to the trees sprayed. Not ovei
10perco „ t . should be wed and the leaver
should not be left dripping. In our ex
periments with this remedy it was noted
that, notwithstanding great care, some
of the peach leaves were scorched
around the margins and when particles
of kerosene lodged on a leaf it burnt lit
tle “shot-holes” through it; but this
slight injury did not result in permanent
damage to the trees. Every part of the
body and limbs should be thoroughly
moistened with the spray but no attempt
should be made to drench the leaves,
f or the reason referred to above. It if
true that the scale occurs in great num
hers on the .eaves as well as the bark of
the tree, but they cannot bo satisfac
torily destroyed.by giving the foliage a
thorough spraying without doing con
siderable damage. Furthermore, when
the leaves shed iu the fall, and die, the
scale insects infesting them will like
wise jierish.
This summer treatment is by no
means sufficient. It must be followed
in the fall, as soon as the foliage is shed,
by an application of 20 per cent, kero
sene. Tho fall or winter treatment can
be applied much more thoroughly than
the summer treatment, as the foliage is
then out of tho way. To obtain good
results every portion of the infested tree
must bo wot from the ground to tho tips
of the twigs, but care should be taken
not to allow the kerosene to run down
and collect about the baso of tho tree.
Last winter a number of trees were kill
ed by such carclossness.
Some growers with infested orchards
have contented themselves with one
winter spraying, and havo, the writer
will admit, succeeded in holding the peat
in check fairly well; but to thoroughly
control it another application of the 20
per cent, kerosene 13 necessary. This
spraying can be made with perhaps the
greatest effect in the spring just before
the trees come into bloom..
These annual sprayings make the treat
meat somewhat expensive ; but, in tin
opinion of the writer, it is more expen
sive in tho eml to neglect one of them,
when the loss by the ravages of the scale
is considered.
In connection with the use of kerosene
up on frqit trees the following empera
tiws should ^ Wesaod upon the op
