MURDERER WAS QUICKLY SEIZED King Had Just Entered His Car riage at Monza When Three Revolver 5hots Were Fir ed In Quick Succession. According to dispatches, King Hum bert ol Italy has been assassinated. He was 6hot at Monza Sunday even ing at 10:45 o’clock by a man named Angelo Bressi, aud died in a few min utes. The king had been attending a dis tribution of prizes in connection with a gymnastic competition which took place about 10 o’clock. He had just entered his carriage with his aide-de-camp, amid the cheers of the crowd, when he was struck by three revolver shots fired in quick suc cession. One pierced the heart of his majesty, who fell back and expired in a few minutes. The assassin was immediately ar- ■ rested and was with some difficulty saved from the fury of the populace He gave his name as Angelo Bressi, describing himself as of Prato, in Tus cany. * Humbert was the eldest son of Vic tor Emanuel aud on the death of his father, in 1878, succeeded to the throne. He was liked by his subjects and was very popular. CABINET SUMMONED. Kews of the terrible event was not received in Rome until midnight. Signor Saraco, the premier, immedi ately summoned a meeting of the cab inet and the ministers will start at the earliest possible moment for Monza. BRESSI AN ANARCHIST. Angelo Bressi, the assassin of King Humbert, according to a special from Home, is an anarchist. ISLANDS WERE LEFT OUT. Baited State* Arr»nj;es to Buy Omitted APart of Philippine*. Arrangements have practically been completed for the purchase from Spain by the United States of the islands of Cxbitn and Cagayen, which were left in Spanish possession by the treaty of Paris although part of the Philippines archipelago. The purchase price is said to be $100,000. Had the peace commissioners at Paris, in arranging for the relinquish ment to the United States of the Phil ippines contented themselves with the phraseology, “The Philippine Archipe lago,” as descriptive of the territory to be ceded to the United States by-Spain, no question, perhaps, would have arises over the possession of Cibitu and Cagayen islands. But to avoid the least chance of loose definition,the peace commissioners drew a geograph ical boundary line around the islands to be transferred. The bounds were fixed by meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude, and iu this way the two small islands were uninten tionally left oat. LIVELY IN NORTH STATE. It has been the liveliest, the most heated campaign in the history of the old North State, eclipsing by far the struggle of 1898; and as the day of election draws near, the interest has reached the fever point. The Charlotte Observer prints special dispatches from every county iu North Carolina forecasting the result of the state election, showing that the pro posed constitutional amendment and the Democratic ticket will have over 40,000 majority. These allege the unlawful drawing •of two orders for $500 each, paying his private coachman and gardener from the postal funds and drawing par diem allowance when not entitled to do so. Iu the trial of Caleb Powers, charged with being an accessory be fore the fact to the murder of William Goebel, which was resumed in George town, Ky., Monday, the defense open ed its side of the case with a motion for peremptory instructions for a ver dict of acquittal. The motion was submitted without argument and was promptly overruled by the court. The defendant, Caleb Powers, took the witness stand. He declared,among other things, that he never knew Jim Howard, Bavland 'Whitaker or Richard Combs, three of the defendants, prior to the assassination. He had only known Youtsey since January 1st. In regard to the bringing of the mountaineers to Frankfort, witness said: “There were three crowds of men brought to Frankfort and I had some thing to do with the organization of each club. The purpose was to show the interest of these people in the matters at issue at that time, and not to intimidate either the election board or the legislature. I instructed the men io do no acts of violence, and so far as I know, none was committed by them.” Witness said he had received iufor matiou that Mr. Hill, the contestant for secretary of state, would not wait until the contests were settled in court, but would try to take forcible possession as soon as the contest board acted. < ( If that sort of thing had been at tempted,” he said, “we intended to hold the offices. I had a conference with Governor Taylor and he advised the bringing of a large body of men to show their interest in political affairs. He also advised that they be brought armed and promised to pay the ex penses. I acted on this. The plans were kept a secret to prevent dropping us through bridges or derailing our trains. I told those in the conference that the utmost secrecy must be ob served m getting them here before the news got out.” CITY AND STATE DEFIED. Bondholders of Street ltallway Company Claim Bights to Atlanta’s Streets. Atlanta’s right to control its own streets has been disputed by a sworn bill Fulton brought iu tkp superior court Qf county. Not disputed, only the right of condemnation is but it is asserted that no other street railroad company can be authorized to build its tracks on any street formerly occu pied by the old Atlanta Street Rail road company, which means all the principal streets of Atlanta. The Central Trust company, of New York, the trustee of §225,000 of bonds, presented a bill for injunction to Judge Gober, claiming that the city of Atlanta is powerless to authorize the Atlanta Rapid Transit compauy to oc cupy jointly with the Atlauta Railway and Bowel company, the tracks on Peachtree aud Whitehall streets for any distance at any point, or to go on those streets at all. The claim is made that the Atlanta Street Railroad company was given the exclusive rights to the streets of At lauta in its original charter granted in 18GG by the Georgia legislature, and that neither the city nor the state, nor both together, cau interfere. The bill was sworn to by G. Sherman, vice president of the trust company. Judge Gober granted a temporary injunction restraining the city, the Atlanta Rapid Transit compauy and the Atlanta Railway and Power com pany from proceeding any further with the condemnation proceedings that have been under way for some time, and which had in view the im mediate joint use by the Atlanta Rapid Transit company and the Atlanta Railway and Power company of cer tain of the latter’s tracks.
