MIL POOR ORPHANS A recent issue of Uockdttl Banner tells a pathosic story of a b arm ] aKg orphan hoy wh o had been around the place for romc time. The boy had crawled into a dry goods box in the porch of Mr. W. B. J. Ingram’s store to sleep. 1 n crawling out before day the next morning lie awakened the merchant, who rushed out with his gun and thinking it a dog prow ling around shot at him, tilling his feet with about sixty bird shot. The Atlanta Constitution of* .July 17, in commenting on this; pathetic incident, holds up its hands in horror that such a thing' should happen “in Georgia,” and says: “Surely it cannot ho that any where in Georgia such an incident as this could have taken place. In a land of churches and of schools, of loieigu missions and ol luippj^ homos, t hat a haimless orphan hoy,' uncared for and neglected. should find refuge only in a un goods I-ox, and he shot at liken do;', t hat, stlcli a thing should he possible must create wonder. “Tho poor wo have always with us; tlie orphan and the widow, and in their care more than prayers long drawn out, lies the essence of Christianty. “A harmless orphan who had been around the place some time! ♦Surely the sentence speaks for itself!” Only a lew months ago, when the orphans, and widow's, and tlie otiiei pou-ity nl l token unlot a ten of Georgia were appealing* the strong men ,f tlu* sn¥Te ! heli> remove tin* curse which ha been the prime cause of their mis ery and save thousands, ol other Georgia boys and Georgia homes from a similar fate. The Atlanta Constitution arose and champ ioned the opposition to their ap peal! Its cunningly phrased edi torials, backed by its commercial and social standing, furnished soothing syrup for a few states men to-pour on their troubled con sciences, and caused a few weaker minds to see even as they were bade to see. Had the Constitution used its influence in behalf of the wives and children of drunken husbands many homes in Georgia might have had a different tale to tell today. The incident of one little orphan wandering about t hro streets when no one would offer shelter and pro tection. seems to touch the heart of the editor of the Constitution. Wouldn’t his heart be the deeper touched if he could see hundreds, of children in Georgia today whose fate is even worse than tlie fato of an orphan with their faces turned to him in a personal appeal for help?—Sentinel. £ DA*VS' '■'**- Om-'.-m'eet!
