Columbus, Ga , June Iff.--John Floyd, a white man, who formerly lived in Girard, day afternoon walked into to buy a pawn pistol.' shop^ester- After a selecting a pistol he rushed cut of the door without paying for it and ex claimed that he was going to kill him self. He hurried into Yarbrough’s sa loon, two doors away, and handing the bartender a note, walked over m the corner, pulled out tho pistol, stuck it ro his head and shot • himself. Floyd fell to the floor and lay in a pool of blood. It was thought at tivsc he was dead, but he showed signs of life and after wards was brought to and carried to his homo up town, where iiis life is now hanging by a thread. The ball entered near his right temple and went through his head. The note Floyd loft the bartender was addressed to his mother, and read as follows! • ‘Dear Mother—I know this will break your old heart, but I cannot help it. Take oaro of my children, and bury me by my brother. Bob.” Floyd has a wife ami several children. He formerly worked iu the-mills. A SAVANNAH PEST SHIP. Reaches New York With a Case of Mmullpox Aboard. Savannah, Juue 18.—A dispatch from New York says: The Oceau Steamship company’s steamer Tallahassee, Captain Askius, which sailed from Savannah June 14, arrived yesterday proceeded at quarantine, re ported all well and to her pier in tho North river. Among her forward cabin passengers was a negro named William Stanton, aged about 25 years. During the pas sage from Savannah Stanton did not complain of being ill. When Stanton landed from the steamer complained he proceeded to Bellevue hospital and of being sick. He was examined by the hospital surgeons smallpox. and discovered The patient to be suffering from was removed to North Brothers island. As the passengers had nil left the steamer after her arrival at the dock, the vessel was placed under observation and none of her crew allowed to go ashore. She was returned to quaran tine this morning for disinfection. Hall and Wind Storm. Ellaville, Ga., June 18.— Ellayille was in the edge of a terrible hail aud wind storm yesterday afternoon. Two miles west of this place tho cotton was stripped of every leaf. Corn and ali other crops suffered heavily. The hail was the heaviest ever seen her.: aud the wind was destructive to timber. Carnegie Library For Macon. Macon, Juue 18.—Mayor Smith today received a letter from Andrew Carne gie, notifying tho former of a gift of $20,000 to Macon for a free library, on condition that tlife city shall appropriate $2,000 a year for its maintenance. Raukin was unmarried aud from Peusacola. McNeill leaves a wife aud three chil dren. MRS. M’KINLEY'S CONDITION. Aw — I’hysiciaus Declare >*!ie Is Now Oul of Danger. Washington, June 18. — Drs. John ston and Rixey held a consultation at the White House thi9 forenoon, at the conclusion of which Dr. Johnston pro nounced Mrs. McKinley out of danger and convalescing. He said there may, of course, bo a recurrence of her trouble, but for the present the danger is past. It is expected President and Mrs. Mc Kinley will be able to leave for Canton by July 1. Dr. Johnston said that the blood iu fectiomhad disappeared entirely. Dr. Rixey, although encouraged by the improvement in Mrs. McKinley’s condition, was somewhat more conser vative in his statement than Dr. John ston. He thought it scarcely safe to say that she was entirely out of danger, as her extreme weakness might precipitate a relapse, bat her condition was quite satisfactory, her improvemeut being steady and seemingly certain of contin uance. BIG FIRE AT BUFFALO. Destruction of Water Front Properly Valued at $250,000. Buffalo, Juue 18.—Fire early today swept out of existeuce all the buildings on Squaw island fronting on the Niagara river, foot of Ferry street, to a point three-quarters of a mile north. The loss is iu the neighborhood of $250,000. The principal buildiugs destroyed were the Frontier mill, owned by the Scoelkopf estate, valued at $50,000; the Ryan elevator, the property of Stephen M. Ryan, $75,000; the Queen City mills. $110,000; Fort Erie Ferry company’s ticket office and waiting room and a part of their docks, i ;,000. Besides these buildings, a dozen nap tha aud steam launches, canal boats aud houseboats anchored in the harbor, valued at about $15,000, were destroyed, together with the dook itself, worth $35,000. Scores of shauties aud boathouses oc cupied by squatters stretching along the shore of the river for nearly a mile added fuel to the flames. EDWARDS IS CAPTURED. Wholesale Lynching of Negroes Ex. peered to Follow. Memphis, Juue 17.—A Scimitar special bulletin from Mouroe, La., says Ed wards, the murderer of J. G. Foster, has been captured, aud that the lynch ing of all the negroes arrested in con nection with the murder will probably take place tonight. Irisit Kxhibit Proposed. St. Louis, June 18.—Steps toward forming a permanent organization to arrange an Irish exhibit for the Louisi ana Purchase exposition has been taken at the meeting of the Irish National World’s Fair association. The commit tee on mode and procedure, which was appointed at a former meeting, made an extensive report iu which it recom mended that $000,000 be raised by sub scription among Irishmen throughout the world for au exhibit. Newark, O., June 18.—A section of the roof of the Baltimore aud Ohio roundhouse here oaved in last night, killing oue mam aud injuring three oth er* Ernest Jackson, aged IV, was crushed about the chest and died. Ora Frye, hurt about the head and back; Lewis Thompson, head hurt aud foot injured so as to require amputation; William Myers, cut ou the head. Oue mau was dug from under an engine but was uuiujured. New Command For Bates. Washington, June 18. — Brigadier General John C. Bates, who recently returned from the Philippines, has been ordered to command the department of the Missouri, with headquarters at Omaha.
