Chicago, Sept. 2.—Organized vori:
men in Chicago and vicinity celebrated
Labor day with numerous picnics tid a
huge parade today. Tito demonstra
tions were blessed with clear skies and
pleasant temperatures.
The parade was about 3 yiilcs in
length and it is estimated that 25,060
trades unionists and musicians were r.i
line. Buildings were not decorated, but
banks, the board of trade, the Stock
change and business houses generally
were closed to allow full observance of
the day. :
The South Chicago Steel workers,
who refused to obey Shaffer’s strike or
der, were not invited to participate in
the demonstrations. They
themsalves at a picnic arranged by their
employers.
A feature of the parade, although not

sidewalks. were the union label attached
to over garment, cap and shoe worn dv
the marchers. A critical committee had
seen to it that the parade should ropro
sent dyed-in-the-wooi unionism and
even tiie horses were not allowed to

Among the speakers at the picnics were
Senators Mason and Cuilom of Illinois,
Mayor Harrison aud Samuel Aisobulor,
