OCTOBER 2. 2003 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 3D Marble Valley Friends Photos of the Week Marble Heritage in Pickens County The Southern Mill at Marble Hill was one of the Georgia Marble Company facilities which was very active in the 1930 - 1950's. It was utilized long before Calcium Products Division was established in 1947. Col. Sam Tate, President of Georgia Marble Company, was involved in all facets of the business from 1905 until a few months before his death in 1938. He visited the mill and quarries daily and acted as overseerer of all finishing operations. He is shown here as an odd sized block from the quarry is delivered to the mill area. Other finishing department workmen are unknown. Col. Sam posed with his unknown worker about 1935. It is a photo of the Southern Mill Day Shift following a safety meeting or award about 1950. Identification has been provided by the late Morris Fouts and Loy Chumley, the only known survivor of this Southern shift. There is one unidentified man from the Tate office in the photo. Marble Valley Friends, Inc. will sponsor a Treasures, Antiques and Misc. Sale at Old Tate Gym on Sat urday, Oct. 4th from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 5th from noon until 4 p.m. Among the special items which will be available will be: furniture, vintage clothing and square dance dresses, housewares and household items, books, records and tapes, toys, jewelry, arts and crafts, home made canned goods and jellies, and homemade cakes and pies. A concession will be available both days. Admission is free. Among the special events will be the raffle of a beautiful hand made quilt. Pieced by the late Mrs. Virgie Lou Bennett at age 91, and quilted by Sara Lee O'Sheilds and Mary Forrester of Tate, the drawing will be Sunday at 4 p.m. The quilt may be viewed at the Antique Mall across from the old hospital until Friday and at the Tate Gym on Saturday and Sunday. Pro ceeds will go to the roofing fund for Tate Gym.
