Quarter horse racing
begins in Pickens County
Ready to race - event organizers say the track is ready, racers are preparing and interest in build
ing in the Marble Trials horse race.
Organizers of the Marble Trials
to take place at Appalachian Downs
on October 2 held an exciting
warm-up horse race on Saturday
September 4, to make sure prepara
tions are in place for the historic
race that is coming up during the
Marble Festival.
Spectators from as far away as
Alabama and horse owners alike
gathered at the racetrack, which is
on Red Bird Way just down the hill
from the Tate Mansion.
Race committee chairman Larry
Kent Butler, of the Butler-Cape
House and Seventy-four Ranch
matched his horses with those of
Terry White and Miguel Azarte
from the horse race track in Ring-
gold, Georgia. And each of the rac
ing stables won a race, Butler’s
“Hawks Blue Sue” on the first race
and “Durazno” (the Peach) of the
White/Azarte stable won the second
race.
Butler says people are calling
from around the southeast, saying
they want to enter horses in the first
annual Marble Trials.
Turf manager Matt Kinzer, of
Kinzer Nurseries says, “The grass
track is sound.”
For more information about the
race, and special accommodations
being offered for horses and guests,
call the Butler-Cape House and Sev
enty-four Ranch at (706) 692 0123.

had numerous phone calls and
emails pertaining to the pageant
indicating that we are expecting
several lovely ladies to participate
in this great event again.”

participating in the Miss Georgia
Marble Pageant, the final deadline
is approaching fast. Tim reports
that the last and final date to regis

to know the number of participants
as soon as we can for the planning

receive awards, so it helps us
greatly to get everyone registered
