September 2008 Events - Divided By Region By Dan Pool Chief Deputy Allen Wigington and County Agent Rick Jasperse con ducted a Monday auction for a small herd of goats seized and impounded by the sher iff’s department earlier that week. Wigington said records revealed no previous sheriff livestock auctions in Pickens County and he had to go back to the 1970s to find where any Georgia sheriff has auc tioned impounded livestock. He said they had given the owner, Bob Hayles, notice that the goats were impound ed and then three days later notice that the animals were going to be auctioned. Hayles was also arrested and charged with letting live stock roam unattended. Hayles said in a later inter view that he had been hospi talized for much of the past month and had not been able to care for the goats. Wigington said there had been at least ten complaints about the goats roaming a neighborhood off Price Creek Road this summer. This marked the third time that the sheriff deputies had been involved with this par ticular herd of goats this sum mer. In the first two instances they had tried to fix the situa tion by helping the owner get the goats back in their pen. Hayles said he couldn’t argue with the fact that the goats were auctioned as he couldn’t care for them nor did he feel he was able to bid on them as he is still unable to care for them. During the auction, pic tures and brief descriptions of each goat was presented. The prices paid ranged from $5 to more than $40 depend ing on the goat. Tom Kuettner with the Georgia Dairy Goats Breeding Association who assisted in handling the goats, said they were in “ter rible shape.” He said the ani mals were underfed, and had a “heavy worm load.” Hayles did dispute that the animals weren’t fed properly. 81 South Main Street Jasper, GA 30143 706-692-2845 22 Bent Tree Drive Jasper, GA 30143 770-893-2600 ! www.estesvr.com • sales@estesvr.com 0 • y/n hi/j/o ^'armA located in Jasper just off Parker Road PICK yOUR LOT NOW & BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME Gated community • 39 Tracts 3-6 Acres • Gorseous Uiews • Great for Horses Directions: Hwy 515 North to Hwy 108. turn right then left onto Refuge Road.
