OCTOBER 3. 2019 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 3A Headwaters of Chattahoochee-Oconee forest are clean In recognition of its 30- plus years of protecting the Chattahoochee-Oconee Na tional Forest and the water sheds that supply clean drinking water to millions in cluding metro Atlanta, Geor gia ForestWatch was named as one of Georgia’s Clean Water Heroes in the annual “Clean 13 Report” released by Georgia Water Coalition. “Clean 13” highlights in dividuals, businesses, non profit organizations and governmental agencies whose extraordinary efforts have led to cleaner rivers, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future for Georgians. “We’re deeply honored by our inclusion in the report,” said Jess Riddle, executive director of Georgia Forest- Watch. “We appreciate this recognition by Georgia Water Coalition of how important the headwaters of the Chatta hoochee-Oconee National Forest are and their impor tance to everyone down stream who depends on them for clean, filtered drinking water.” Georgia ForestWatch is the only organization in Georgia devoted exclusively to protecting the 867,510 acres of public lands that make up the Chattahoochee- Oconee National Forest (CONF). Using science- based analysis and boots-on- the-ground field work, ForestWatch volunteers work with the U.S. Forest Service, local communities, and part ner organizations to promote sustainable forest manage ment practices and preserve the forestlands that form the linchpin of north Georgia’s recreation and tourism economies. Visited by 2.8 million people annually, the CONF contains some of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes, home to many threatened species, special wild places, and old-growth trees, but it is considered an “urban forest” due to its proximity to Metro Atlanta.
