OCTOBER 10. 2019 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 7B Marble Festival’s Art Competition and Exhibition growing in variety, number and quality By Max Caylor Progress contributor “The quality of art in the exhibition is very impressive and the huge variety makes it difficult to judge,” said local professional artist Dee Bog- gus. She was the final judge of the five categories with the exception of the People’s Choice. Chamber Executive Direc tor Amberle Godfrey said, “without the Benefactor Sponsor, Atlantic Coast Con servancy; Patrons, Jasper Coca Cola and Reinhardt Uni versity; Contributors, Sup porters and Friends we could have not have experienced these fine arts.” Winners were awarded cash prizes. Lynn Mayes’s “150” acrylic on canvas was awarded Best in Show. Sculp tor Bill Cook won first and second in Marble with his “Song of Siren” and “Baby Ray.” Alan Quandee’s “Curley Maple Hollow” received the blue ribbon in 3-Dimensional and Sheryl Holstein’s “Black and Gold Pitcher” came in second. The “Nest,” water media on paper, by Barbara Edwards won first place in Dimen sional and Deborah Tidwell’s “The Swimming Hole” won the red ribbon. First place in Photography went to Cynthia Todd for “Windows” and Dean Kel ley’s composite “Round Table” was awarded second place for his work. 2019 was the third year of the renewed fine arts compe tition and exhibition. Judge Boggus inspired the group when she said, “I can see this event growing bigger and bet ter with the right support.” People's Choice was "Spirit Warrior," an oil on canvas by Anthony Abreu. He says, "I chose to paint "Spirit Warrior" because of the Mystical Eye that stares right into your soul." First place in 3-Dimensional went to Alan Quandee for his Best in Show was an acrylic on canvas by Lynn Mayes ti- "Curley Maple Hollow." His segmented turning used 145 tied "#150." pieces of wood and the work took 30-45 hours on a lathe. First place in Marble was a warded to sculptor Bill Cook, Jr. for his caning "Song of Siren " in Alabama marble. Cook said of his work, "I see the piece in the block of marble and work to uncover it." This work took about a year to finish and came from a 450 pound block of marble. First place in 2-Dimensional was earned by Barbara Ed wards for her water media "Nest." The eggs for her work came from abandon bird nests. Edwards said, " It is impossi ble to say how many hours I worked on the piece because I keep working until I like it."
