PAGE 10B PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS THURSDAY. OCTOBER 10. 2019 jmo WAS CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS’? Christopher Columbus, the son of a wool merchant and weaver, was born in Genoa, Italy. At the young age of 14, he set sail for the first time. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain became interested in his very adventuresome voyage ideas. On August 2, 1492, Columbus set sail in search of the East Indies. The voyage was financed by the King and Queen. Columbus and a 90-man crew traveled aboard three ships on the trip to the New World. The ships were named The Nina, The Pinta, and the largest ship which Columbus command ed, The Santa Maria. Columbus never actually arrived on the mainland of the Americas, which he believed to be the Indies, until his third voyage to the New World. On Christmas Day of 1492, the Santa Maria sank off the coast of Hispaniola. On January 16, 1493, Columbus set sail back to Spain aboard the Nina, arriving there on March 4 of the same year. His second voyage departed for the New World in September 1493 with 17 ships. The ships carried people and supplies to begin colonization. Columbus would sail back and forth between the New and Old Worlds two more times before his death in Valladolid, Spain, on May 20, 1506. Columbus Day is cele brated in honor of the voyages that Columbus made. Although he was not the first person to discover the Americas, he is recognized as one of the most-important contributors to colonization. We recognize Columbus, and his accomplish ments, every year by celebrating Columbus Day on the second Monday of October. This year, Columbus Day is on October 14. President Franklin D.
