out great as Chandler led the
one and only practice of the
day. Next up qualifying was
set and in the end he started
3rd missing the pole by .013
tenths. Running 2nd all race
long the team used strategy
for a late race caution and
took their last set of tires.
Restarting 3rd Chandler
found himself taking the lead
at lap 161 and led the rest of
the race when the rain
started. The race was called
after the track was soaked
and Chandler left with all 3
goals, owners championship,
5th win to end the season and
laps led championship again.
His ARCA stats are 10 top
10’s 8 top 5’s, 4 poles, 696
laps led and one race finish
ing 15th with a axle failure.

On this day in 1969, the
New York Mets and Balti
more Orioles became the first
winners of their respective
championship series and both
clubs completed three-game
sweeps to advance to the
World Series. In the National
League, the Mets ran the
table on the Atlanta Braves
following a 7-4 victory at
Shea Stadium. Tommie Agee
hit a solo shot while Ken
Boswell and Wayne Garrett
each homered for two runs.
Nolan Ryan also achieved the
first postseason win of his ca
reer in that same contest.
Meanwhile, the Orioles
clinched the American
League flag after blowing out
the Minnesota Twins, 11-2.
Paul Blair went five for six
with five RBI's, a stat line
that included a two-run
homer in the eighth. Balti
more buried Minnesota with
six unanswered runs while
Jim Palmer went the distance
on the mound.
October 7th:
On this day in 1984,
Chicago Bears' running back,
Walter Payton, surpassed Jim
Brown as the NFL's all-time
rushing leader. This took
place during the Bears' 20-7
victory over the New Orleans
Saints at Soldier Field.
Sweetness finished the game
with 154 yards and a touch
down on 32 carries and
brought his career-total to
12,400 in the process. Payton
retired in 1987 with 16,726
yards and his record stood
until 2002, when Dallas
Cowboys' running back, Em-
mitt Smith, took over that top
spot.
October 8th:
On this day in 1956, New
York Yankees' pitcher, Don
Larsen, tossed the only per
fect game in World Series
history during a 2-0 shutout
over the Brooklyn Dodgers
in Game five. Larsen finished
with seven strikeouts and
lucky number seven was the
one that completed his per
fect performance. This was
the last perfect game in major
league postseason history
until the late Roy Halladay
recorded one of his own for
the Philadelphia Phillies in
Game one of the 2010 NLDS
against the Cincinnati Reds.
Also on this day in 1961, an
other Yankee pitching leg
end, Whitey Ford, set a
World Series record for con
secutive scoreless innings
with 32. This took place dur
ing the Yankees' 7-0 blanking
of the Reds in Game four.
Ford allowed just four hits
through five innings and this
outing helped him win Most
Valuable Player honors. He
also earned the fifth World
Series ring of his career and
retired in 1967 with six to his
resume.
October 9th:
On this day in 2003, the
Edmonton Oilers honored
Grant Fuhr, the club's goal-
tender from 1981 until 1991,
by retiring his number 31.
Fuhr's Edmonton stint fea
tured an overall record of
226-117-54 with a 3.69 goals
against average, an 0.883
save percentage and nine
shutouts. He also made six
All-Star appearances and
won five Stanley Cups with
those star-studded Oiler
teams. Fuhr even became a
member of the Hockey Hall
of Fame in 2003.
October 10th:
On this day in 1999, the
St. Louis Rams ended their
infamous 17-game losing
streak to the San Francisco
49ers, a string that dated all
the way back to the 1990 sea
son. That's almost a decade
without a victory right there,
folks!!! On this day however,
the Rams, didn't get a victory,
they got a blowout. The main
ingredient was wide receiver,
Isaac Brace, who made five
receptions for 134 yards and
four of those catches resulted
in touchdowns. Brace helped
Kurt Warner complete 20 of
23 passes for 323 yards and
five scores. Meanwhile, Nin-
ers' quarterback, Jeff Garcia,
threw three interceptions and
wide receiver, Jerry Rice,
made only four catches for
the entire game.
October 11th:
On this day in 1980, the
Dallas Mavericks played
their first NBA regular sea
son game in franchise history
and responded by defeating
the San Antonio Spurs, 103-
92. Winford Boynes led the
Mavs with 21 points while
Tom LaGarde finished with
19 points, 14 rebounds and
five assists. Throughout their
four decades of existence, the
Mavericks have made 21
postseason appearances, won
50 or more games 14 times,
including three with 60 or
more, won three division ti
tles, two conference crowns
and the 2011 league champi
onship following a six-game
victory over the "Big Three"
of the Miami Heat.
October 12th:
On this day in 1980, the
National Hockey League's
100,000th goal was scored by
Toronto Maple Leafs' right
winger, Wilf Paiement, who
reached the milestone on an
empty netter that sealed
Toronto's 4-2 victory over the
Philadelphia Flyers. It was
Paiement's second goal of the
contest and he went on to
score 356 over the course of
his 14-year NHL career. He
also tallied 458 assists for an
overall total of 814 points
and made three consecutive
All-Star appearances from
1976 until 1978.

drive. The Raiders were able
to take advantage of their
next possession and drove
the ball down for their second
score in the game.
Pickens would answer
right back. Six plays into
their second series of the half,
CJ Streicher found the end
zone for his second rushing
touchdown on the night. The
defense would again hold up
against the Raiders. On
fourth and 12 Sy Chadwick
and Alex Snelgrove com
bined for a key sack of the
Southeast quarterback to
force a turnover on downs.
The offense would again
move the ball into Southeast
territory. This time Streicher
connected with Snelgrove
through the air on a beautiful
back shoulder fade. The de
fense forced a 3 and out for
the Raiders, and Jarod Whit
more broke a long punt re
turn to give the Dragons great
field position on their fourth
possession of the quarter.
Two plays later, Streicher
connected with Dylan Arp
for his first touchdown of the
season. The third quarter
would come to an end with
the Dragons up 45-14. The
fourth quarter saw a lot of
fresh faces enter the game for
the Dragons. Southeast was
able to score one more time
early in the 4th to bring the
final score to 45-21 in favor
of the Dragons.
Although the Dragons
started slow, they only got
better as the game went on.
Senior Quarterback CJ Stre
icher accounted for six total
touchdowns, three rushing
and three through the air. The
offense as a whole accounted
for 532 yards on the night.
Streicher and Jarod Whit
more both rushed for over
100 yards, while Alex Snel
grove led all receivers with
five receptions. TC Jarrett led
the way on defense with
seven tackles. Sophomore
Collin Kellogg had the lone
interception to seal the game
for the Dragons.
Next up for the Pickens
will be the Heritage Gener
als. The team will go on the
road this Friday to take on
a perineal playoff team in
the Generals. Kickoff is
7:30.

Jr. High Nettes win Mountain Middle School Tournament
Again, the team was victori
ous in two straight games,
25-16 and 25-20. This win
set up the championship
match against White County,
a team the Nettes had also
split matches with during the
regular season.
The Nettes jumped out to
an early lead in match 1 on
the strength of their serves
and team play. The team took
the first set 25-21. The Nettes
again jumped out to an early
lead in set 2, but White
County showed their experi
ence and came back and won
the set 25-20. The Nettes
started set 3 slowly and al
lowed the Warriors to take an
early lead. The Nettes settled
down, fought back, and tied
the score 14-14. After a
timeout by the Warriors, the
Nettes scored the next 2
points to win the game 16-14
and the championship. This
was the school’s first
MMSVL Championship.
The team finished the sea
son on a nine match winning
streak, finishing the season
11-2 in region play and 24-4
overall. Opposing coaches
and officials talked about
how well the team played to
gether. They also noted that
all the players knew their
roles on the team and did
them well. Georgia Teal, Lil-
lly Wendt, Cameron Simp
son, and Mary Hebert scored
some huge points at the net.
The setter, and team leader,
Susanna King kept the team
focused and got some big as
sists when the team needed
them. Emery Steinhauer, the
team’s most improved and
most consistent server, had
some huge runs at serve
when they were needed the
most. Annabelle Jordan, Eva
Stanley and Sherry Wells
started rallies with their re
turn of serves, getting the ball
to the setter so the offense
could operate.
