In a recent blog, Cooperative Baptist Fel
lowship Executive Coordinator Paul Baxley
stated, “We do not need to be part of a re
opening. We have never been closed. But we
do look forward to the day when we can
gather in-person again, because at its core,
our faith is exceedingly relational. As we
look toward that day, what should we be con
sidering? How might we approach this chal
lenge?”
The staff at First Baptist of Jasper has
begun the process of addressing the chal
lenges and issues of safely gathering in-per-
son again. However, until we can do so, we
are open. Only in a different way. Our Sun
day morning service can be viewed each Sun-

Minister’s Corner
Which Gift Is Yours?
By Ralph Barker
President
Pickens County
Ministerial Association
Have you ever looked
into a drawer, your base
ment, or closet and found
something of value you
didn't know you had? If
you do, you may discover
one of your lost treasures.
It is like getting an unex
pected gift.
Who knows, you may
just find a signed Mickey
Mantle rookie card,
grandma's long lost dia
mond ring, or a rare early
copy of the U.S. Constitu
tion. Wouldn't that be a
great gift?
It is fair to say that
every human being has
some gifts that God gives
them. Some people can
sing or dance. Some can
work with their hands and
build large buildings or
create the intricate work
ings of a watch. Others can
use their physical strength
to do what others can't. We
all have God-given gifts.
On a more spiritual
note, the chances are high
you have some spiritual
gift that God has given you
that you don't know you
have or don't use. The fact
is, according to Scripture,
every Christian has a gift.
Some people have multiple
gifts. Romans 12:3-8 lists
some of the gifts God gives
to His people.
Scripture tells us that
some of us have the gift of
teaching, others have the
gift of service, generosity,
exhortation, or maybe
mercy. There are also ad
ministrative gifts and the
power gifts (I Corinthians
12-14). God distributes His
gifts as He wills so that the
Body of Christ is fully
equipped to carry out His
will on this earth. Which
gift is yours?
When we use our gifts,
we feel useful and fulfilled
because we know we are
serving God with the tools
He has given us. To make a
point, allow me to refer
ence a wonderful movie
that was released in 1981.

Empathy
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and
anger; brawling and slander; along
with everyform of malice. Be kind
and compassionate to one another.;
forgiving each other; just as in
Christ God forgave you. ”
Ephesians 4:31-32 NIV
E mpathy is the ability to
understand what another
person is experiencing, and
it is arguably the quality most
important to the survival of our
species. It allows us to care for the
helpless, whether they are
newborns, the infirm or the aged
among us. Empathy is for most of
us closely tied to tribal and family
connections; we are naturally more
empathetic towards our immediate
family and members of our tribe,
whether that tribe is an ethnic
group, a political party or a nation
state. People usually find it easier to
empathize with their native
countrymen than with foreigners.
And therein lies a potential
problem, that is, we can sometimes
overlook the needs of others simply
because they don’t look like us or
speak the same language, or have
the same beliefs. In short, empathy
can be parochial, and then rather
than being a positive trait that
encourages pro-social behavior it
becomes a source of division. Try to
inculcate the better angels of your
nature by seeking to understand
others, especially those who are
radically different, and remember
that love unites while hatred
divides. Empathy and tribalism can
work together as long as we realize
that the tribe we belong to is
humanity.
