Terrence, (a.k.a. Sarge), spent 42 years as a sgt. major in the Army and Joshua is a police officer in Gwinnett County. By Angela Reinhardt Staff Writer areinhardt@piekensprogress.com Wednesday morning into the afternoon, motorists in the downtown Jasper area may have noticed a few gag gles of kids wandering around - crossing streets or walking along sidewalks. These weren’t trouble makers gone rouge, they were 5th grade Jasper Middle School students on an educa tional tour of Jasper (with teacher supervision, of course.) The classes of over 5th graders about to head into the Pickens County Courthouse for a tour and Q&A session with the magistrate and probate judges. 300 students visited seven different locations and got a big dose of history at each. On their tour students vis ited the Old Jail, where they learned about jail history and where Mary Cantrell (the sheriff’s daughter who lived in the jail in the lower-level residence when she was a young girl) told stories about her life there. “Jailers” in cos tume gave a tour of the upper level where inmates were kept. Students also visited the Oglethorpe Monument, the Quinton-Kirby Cabin, the Pickens County Courthouse, Pickens County Veterans Memorial Park where a flag folding and flag retirement ceremony were demon strated, the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce, and Lee Newton Park. Kenny Simpson, a 5th grade student, said, “I love hearing stories about the old jail from the lady who used to live there. I have never been there before. I learned that I could be chosen to be a juror one day. I did not know about the 13 folds of the flags. I was respectful during the flag retirement ceremony and recited the pledge with the veterans.” Teacher Brian Ledford said, “It is a wonderful op portunity for our students to learn about the history of Pickens County firsthand from volunteers in our com munity.” Volunteers were at each location, including those from the Rotary Club of Jasper, Sequoyah Chapter of the Daughters of the Ameri can Revolution, Pickens County Veterans Memorial Park, City of Jasper Fire De partment, the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce, Pickens Magistrate Judge Alan Morris and Pickens Probate Judge David Lind sey.
