PAGE 2A PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS THURSDAY. JUNE 30. 2022 Celebs to get pie in face to help animal charities and Thrift Store Sheriff Donnie Craig City of Jasper Manager Sonia Jammes County Public Safety Director Sloan Elrod By Suellen Reitz Public Affairs Officer Community Thrift Store Everyone loves animals. Man’s best friend and all... even if you don’t have a pet of your own, it’s hard to re sist adorable puppies and kit tens. Here in Pickens County, that love for animals is over flowing with the number of nonprofit agencies that exist to help our furry friends. Pickens Community Thrift Store, located at 110 Samaritan Dr. decided to add a new element to their second annual Christmas In July Festival which will be held on July 16 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. They wanted to help some of our local nonprofits di rectly with proceeds from the festival. Something everyone could support and get behind. What better than our pets? In addition to live music, free food, hayride and games along with fantastic Christ mas decor available at rock bottom prices and of course... Santa with gifts for the kids...there will defi nitely be an animal vibe throbbing so strong it will surely touch our hearts. Pickens nonprofit groups supporting animals will be there sharing how they make a difference in the lives of our future pets. Visitors will have the opportunity to adopt a pet on site. All cats and dogs will have everything ready to go... shots, spayed or neutered, and even a micro chip to keep from getting lost. Only thing missing is you. If you already have your pets, bring them along for free rabies shots. To help raise funds which will be equally distributed among all of Pickens animal organizations, we originally planned to have a dunk tank and pie throwing station with minimal costs to the crowd to join in on the fun. Several known faces stepped up to face the water or pie foil of cream. That idea grew to even more with a super push for donations be fore the festival by using well known celebrities from both Jasper and Pickens County. Pickens Sheriff Donnie Craig, Pickens Public Safety Director Sloan Elrod, and Jasper City Manager Sonia Jammes all agreed to take the hit for the cause and are hop ing to help raise $2,500 for our pets. When asked what they thought of the efforts to raise awareness and funds for our animals, all agreed there could not be a more worthy cause. Donation jars can be found in all city and county offices, local banks, the Chamber, Community Thrift Store and the numerous pet organizations throughout Pickens. If you would like to write a check, please make it out to Community Thrift Store and on the for line, write Pickens Pets. Each of the three celebs will have the opportunity to select their official pie thrower. Sheriff Craig has chal lenged his staff with the promise of throwing honors to be awarded to the highest donor. The big event will take place at 12:30 on stage at the festival site behind the store. It was decided that the dunk tank might take away some of the lime light, so the plug has been pulled...at least for this time. We’re hoping those who already signed up for the plunge will be up for a pie instead. Our other celebs and wanna be’s will be up for the toss a pie immediately fol lowing those on stage. A published schedule will be available on site if you are looking for someone special to share your pies. And for those who dare, a second pie station will be set up for anyone who always dreamed of being hit in the face with a pie for a good cause. Don’t miss this great fam ily fun community event. Bring a pet or get one there and tell your friends to join you. Saturday, July 16 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. behind the thrift store. Help us meet our goal and even go beyond our wildest expectations. Your pets will thank you. The Lodge at Stephens Lake welcomes Jessi Barton as community relations director Jessi Barton joins The Lodge at Stephens Lake, Jasper’s newest senior liv ing community. This is not a one-day compe tition. It is a journey that starts the year before. Molly’s jour ney started in January of 2021 with her project work, placed first in the district in March, food preparation demonstration in June, and will end at Georgia 4-H State Congress in July. In 4-H youth are chal lenged to pick an area of in terest and leam more about it through research, tours, and interviews. Then they must share what they’ve learned with younger 4-Hers and community members. Fi nally, they perform commu nity service and exhibit leadership skills in various ways. 4-Hers go to the district competition where they give a presentation in their project area. For food projects this does not come in the form of a speech, but it is a hands-on demonstration of food prepa ration. In Molly’s project, Festive Foods for Health, 4- Hers prepare a healthy dish which reflects an interna tional flair or is a special oc casion dish. Molly prepared Hawaiian chicken with pineapple salsa. Judges looked at her skilled work such as knife skills, her knowledge of My Plate and major nutrients found in each portion, the correct place ment of flatware, the finished product, lab and time man agement, and Molly’s ap pearance. Molly won first place in the district and now advances to the state competition. This past weekend Molly traveled to Rock Eagle to complete the hands-on por tion of the state level compe Molly was given ninety minutes to chop, mince, slice, and dice all ingredients; cook the dish, prepare a table set ting, and clean all dishes. She had to present her com plete meal with a proper table setting. Molly made her dish with ease. When judges asked her nutrition questions, she really stood out among her peers. The next step on the jour ney is to travel to Atlanta for State Congress in late July where she will be joined by, not only those in her cate gory, but all the different dis trict project winners at the senior level of Georgia 4-H. She will complete part two of the competition which is an interview with profes sionals in the area, similar to a job interview. This score will be combined with the score from the hands-on por tion and the winners an nounced in the ballroom at the state congress. Molly Hooker demonstrating her recipe of Hawaiian chicken with pineapple salsa is in the running for state honors at the state 4-h Congress in July.
