Minister’s Comer
Gettysburg, the main address
was delivered by Massachu
setts statesman Edward
Everett. He spoke for two
hours. His speech, steeped in
the tradition of ancient Greek
oratory, was 13,607 words
long, delivered without notes.
It included allusions to the
Battle of Marathon and com
parisons with the English
Civil Wars, the War of the
Roses, and wars in German,
French, and Italian history. In
his conclusion, Everett de
clared, ‘“The whole earth,’
said Pericles, as he stood
over the remains of his fel
low-citizens, who had fallen
in the first year of the Pelo
ponnesian War, ‘the whole
earth is the sepulchre of illus
trious men.’ All time, he
might have added, is the mil
lennium of their glory.”
The world did little note
nor long remember Mr.
Everett’s remarks, but Amer
icans are still inspired and
humbled by the two minute
speech delivered by the quiet
man who followed him, a
“homely figure, whose
melancholy dripped from
him as he walked, the very
picture of dejection and
gloom.” Lincoln expressed
the essence and spirit of Me
morial Day: “that from these
honored dead we take in
creased devotion to that
cause for which they gave the
last full measure of devo
tion—that we here highly re
solve that these dead shall not
have died in vain—that this
nation, under God, shall have
a new birth of freedom—and
that government of the peo
ple, by the people, for the
people, shall not perish from
the earth.”
America desperately
needs illustrious men willing
to live, and die, “under God”,
if freedom is to survive.

Creativity and Celebrations at FPC
Creativity continues to
abound at Fellowship Pres
byterian Church. This past
Sunday the remarkable com
memorative painting
“Crescendo to Joy” by local
artist Robert Calcagno was
unveiled in our sanctuary
during our 10 morning wor
ship service. This original
work was created as a memo
rial to celebrate the life of
Becky Laughlin. In speaking
to the congregation,
Calcagno interpreted how a
Crescendo is the loudest
point reached in a gradually
increasing sound. This paint
ing suggests the “highest
point of joy” in our human
existence. The faceless choir
members in the painting are
not identified because they
represent all of us.... past,
present and future. The choir
is not limited to singing but
suggests all acts of life as we
live out our faith. When we
live out our faith in accor
dance with teachings of the
Choir’s Director, Jesus

May 21-May 27
May 21st:
On this day in 1981, the New York Is
landers proved their Stanley Cup title of a
year ago wasn’t a fluke. The Isles went back-
to-back following their five-game finals se
ries victory over the Minnesota North Stars,
which was capped by a 5-1 win. This cup also
represented New York’s second of four
straight championships. Islanders center,
Butch Goring, scored twice, with one of his
goals coming during a power play situation
at the 5:12 mark of the opening period. Gor
ing earned the Conn Smythe award after tal
lying 20 points throughout the ’81 playoffs.
Billy Smith, who averaged a 0.906 postsea
son winning percentage during the Isles’ four
consecutive title runs, completed this contest
with 24 saves.
May 22nd:
On this day in 1949, Brooklyn Dodgers
pitcher, Don Newcombe, made his first major
league start. “Newk” responded with a com
plete five-hit performance, tossing just 99
pitches while allowing zero walks. He even
added a two-run RBI-single in the top of the
second as the Dodgers blanked the Cincinnati
Reds, 3-0. Newcombe was the very first re
cipient of the Cy Young award in 1956. He
also became the first hurler in major league
history to win that along with the Rookie of
the Year and Most Valuable Player awards.
May 23rd:
On this day in 1995, the starting pitchers
took center stage in a matchup between the
Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies. Cubs
hurler, Kevin Foster, and his Colorado coun
terpart, Marvin Freeman, became the 10th
major league pitchers to homer off one an
other in the same contest. Foster drew first
blood on a line drive to deep right field in the
top of the third. Freeman responded with a
three-run blast of his own in the bottom of the
fourth. However, it was Foster and the Cub
bies who ended up prevailing in a 7-6 victory.
May 24th:
On this day in 1946, Joe McCarthy re
signed as the manager of the New York Yan
kees and was replaced by Bill Dickey. Mc
Carthy’s struggles with alcoholism led to his
departure from the Bronx. He still left behind
a very impressive track record by winning
eight American League pennants. Seven of
those flags were transformed into World Se
ries titles. McCarthy also collected six 100-
win campaigns before compiling an overall
record of 1,460-867-21 during his 16 seasons
in the stripes. He became a member of the
Baseball Hall of Fame in 1957 and a Yankee
Stadium Monument Park nominee in 1976.
May 25th:
On this day in 1935, Babe Ruth socked the
last three home runs of his major league ca
reer, bringing his overall total to 714 for that
category. The Babe was an aging right fielder
for the lowly Boston Braves at the time, but
he provided the fans with one more legendary
moment at Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field. Ruth
had a pair of two-run blasts in the first and
third innings, respectively, before following
with a solo shot in the seventh. He went four
for four with six RBIs, but Pittsburgh ended
up winning, 11-7.
May 26th:
On this day in 1986, Pittsburgh Penguins
center, Mario Lemieux, received the Lester
B. Pearson award, which was renamed the
Ted Lindsay award in 2009. This trophy goes
to the NHL’s Most Outstanding Player and
Lemieux earned it after logging 48 goals and
141 points through 79 games. “Super Mario”
went on to win this honor three more times
in 1988, 1993 and 1996.
May 27th:
On this day in 1982, the NHL’s Colorado
Rockies found themselves under a new own
ership group that was headed by John Mc
Mullen. Shortly after making this purchase,
McMullen and his associates made the im
mediate decision to move the club away from
the Rocky Mountains and into the Jersey
Meadowlands. With the relocation came a
name change and the team became known as
the New Jersey Devils.

contact from behind by
Jones. The race resumed on
lap 21 with Suarez still the
leader. That would change on
lap 55 when Larson, on four
new tires after pitting during
the Stenhouse caution, took
the lead. The last caution
flew at the halfway mark on
lap 100 for a competition
caution. The race resumed on
lap 111 with Larson still the
leader. The race would go
green the last 90 laps of the
race and Larson would grab
onto the lead the last 90 laps
to win NASCAR’s return to
North Wilksboro.
This was a short and un
eventful race as there was lit
tle passing. There were a
decent number of battles for
position, but it was very hard
to pass as the track only had
one groove to run. When
drivers were on the outside
lane either restarting or hav
ing someone trying to pass
them on the inside, they
would fall back. No one in
the race was able to use the
outside lane to make a pass,
and while it did lead to some
bumpin’ and bangin’ for po
sition, it was annoying to see.
Another thing that hurt the
race was Larson’s domi
nance. It’s totally normal for
drivers to dominate in races,
but when the racing every
where else isn’t fun to watch,
it makes the boring race even
more boring. Larson pulled
away to over a 10-second
lead before the competition
caution due to having fresh
tires, and pulled to as far a
4.5 second lead over 2nd
place Wallace in the second
half of the race. It was fun to
revisit an old-school
NASCAR track, but it, unfor
tunately, was not a worth
while comeback. It was way
better than last year’s All-
Star race, but still not an en
joyable one to watch.
Next week, we head to
what was the best race of the
season last year, the Coca-
Cola 600. Last year’s race
was an all-time classic race,
so we’ll see if the NextGen
car can provide another fan
tastic Coke 600.
