Living in the Woods -
Common Sense Measures to Minimize the Risk of Wildfire
By Clayton Preble
President
Wildcat Community
The wildfires raging in
Canada should serve as a
wakeup call to all of us in
Pickens County.
In 2006 a group of neigh
bors worked together to forge
a plan to address the unique
needs of our Jasper mountain
community.
What came from those
discussions was a volunteer
organization known as the
Wildcat Community - made
up of those communities lo
cated in the Pickens moun
tains.
In 2009, with the support
of the community and the
county, we opened our all
volunteer fire station - Pick
ens County Station 10.
Today, the Wildcat Com
munity is made up of 10
communities: Bent Tree, Big
Canoe, Burnt Mountain Es
tates, Monument Falls, Sas
safras Mountain Estates, Tate
Mountain Estates, Toma
hawk, Wintermont, Wind-
song, and Independents.
The cornerstone of the
Wildcat Community is the
nationally recognized pro
gram known as FireWise
USA. Firewise USA is a vol
untary program that provides
the framework to help neigh
bors get organized, find di
rection, and take action to
decrease the risk of wildfire

to their homes and commu
nity.
The Wildcat Community
is certified Firewise, and as
such each member commu
nity supports and promotes
Firewise initiatives. Those
initiatives include under
standing wildfire threats,
preparing homes for the risk
of wildfire, removing dead
fall, establishing a defensible
space, etc.
Why is this important for
you? Although recent rains
create lush and green foliage,
we are entering the time of
the year when the risk of
wildfire reaches its peak.
With summer approaching
and the likelihood of dry con
ditions, all of us (long time
and especially new residents,
who may not understand the
risk), need to be mindful of
our individual responsibility
to take steps to minimize the
risk to ourselves and our
neighbors.
We should also become
educated about steps each of
us needs to take to make our
homes Firewise and be pru
dent and extremely careful
with fireplace ashes and out
side fires.
Factors that affect the
spread of wildfire include
humidity, ground fuel
(leaves, branches, limbs,
etc.), wind and slope. In ad
dition, our mountains pro
vide the watershed for our
community. If that water
shed is destroyed by wildfire,
our entire community will
suffer.

donations
CARES, Inc., Pickens
County’s community assis
tance organization needs our
help. Reductions in govern
ment funding, at both the
federal and state level, has
affected the availability of
non-perishable food they
normally receive. While they
anticipate the shortage to be
temporary, they are reaching
out for assistance in the
meantime.
They are asking the com
munity to help by bringing
food to their facility at 89
Cares Drive in Jasper be
tween the hours of 9-12 on
Monday - Friday.
They wish to express
their gratitude for supporting
their efforts to provide food
for those in need in our

REPRINT — Due to a technical font problem, if anyone solved last week’s puzzle,
they had to be a complete master of reading gibberish produced when a table/fonts
don’t match up on a printing press. Here we are making another shot.
For this month’s Pickens Puzzler we’re honoring our
veterans and the upcoming Memorial Day with a military-
themed crossword. For clues to the local veterans
referenced see a list of fallen vets in Pickens on this page.
You’ll also find historical footnotes to some answers near
the answers on 8B.
