On Sunday, December 24 i * \ n0 U ■ Jan' 1 i The story in Luke tells how Mary and Joseph had major hurdles and disrup tions in getting to Bethlehem. They had to obey the decree of the Roman Emperor to go to the husband’s hometown to be registered in the census. It is @ 70 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem, through mountainous terri- Christmas Eve Count tory, and around or through Jerusalem, the major city. Nazareth was up in the hill country, away from culture and high living. We’d call it the sticks, the backwoods. Sort of like Jasper is to At lanta. Mary was very close to giving birth. When they got to the little suburb of Bethle hem after difficult travel, inion at Holy Family they had to bed down in a lean-to manger. Mary gave birth in a hay-bed and laid Jesus in a feed trough. Joseph must have been very anxious. A few things come clear in the story- Mary and Joseph were poor, and they were law-abiding Jews. Roman le gions occupied their home land. They had to camp out Church Events & Activities where Jesus was born. They had no helpers, no attendants at the birth. No wonder the angels had to recruit shep herds to attend Jesus’ birth.” The Episcopal Church of the Holy Family is located in Jasper off of Cove Road at 100 Griffith Road. at Mountain Light UU Church, Mountain Light member Dr. Ron Sturgis will speak about how the lessons of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" apply to today's so cial, political, and personal issues. Bells ringing, children singing, parties, all kinds of sweets, cocoa, pies, cookies, cakes, etc. Carol ing, presents and fellow ship. These are the things that make us happy and feel good. There is also a dark side. People, especially older people, are more vulnerable. Many differ ent scams are so easily beset on these and others. No one is exempt from these kinds of things. One thing we can do to prevent these is by not revealing too much of our personal information to anyone. If we think about the reason for this special sea son of the year our mind set about Christmas will be different. We will do things differently than if we think only of presents, food and parties, etc. Jesus came to seek and save our souls. He suf fered and died a horrible death on the cross so we could live eternally, with out suffering, sickenss, pain or death in paradise. There are many promises Jesus made in the Bible and they are all true. He has proven this time in our lives. Jesus wants us to enjoy our life. One of His prom ises is: as a follower of Continued on Following Page A Christmas Message “God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. ” 1 Corinthians 1:28-29 NIV W hat is the message we should send to loved ones at Christmas? Perhaps we should take our cue from the message God was sending to us in sending His son Jesus. That the savior of the world came to us as a helpless baby, born in a stable to parents who were travelers without a place to stay and in dire circumstances speaks volumes. The message that God appears to be sending in the circumstances of Christ’s humble birth is that God cares about the lowly and that no matter how humble the circumstances, we can live a godly life. Remember that wise men came to offer gifts to this humble, helpless child. And it’s not as if God has any animosity for the rich or famous; it’s just that the rich and famous shouldn’t think they are somehow more important in the grand scheme of things than the poor unknowns who make up the vast majority of the people who have ever lived. Perhaps the Christmas message is simply that God cares for all of us, but that there is a special place in his heart for the lowly and downtrodden. -Christopher Simon 102.1 FM All Praise and Worship MOUNTAIN ISPEEDBURGER, INC Fresh Cooked Barbeque Fresh Chicken Cooked To Order Dine In Or Carry Out Service Phone In For Carry Out Service 612 East Church St., Jasper 706-692-5136 Episcopal Church fpl of the Holy Family 202 Griffith Rd., Jasper, GA 30143 (Just off Cove Road near Grandview Road) holvfamilvepiscopalchurch.net Sundays 8:00 am - Quiet Service & Communion 9:15 am - Christian Education 10:30 am - Musical Service & Communion HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING CO., INC. 700 South Main Street, Jasper (706) 253-3554 www.densonhvac.com AUTO PARTS 706-253-2657 521 North Main Street Jasper, GA30143 We deliver daily after 4:00p.m. ^ 744 Noah Dr., #116 NEW YORK STYLE Jasper, GA 3-143 ' 706-253-0800 “Your Neighborhood Pizzeria' JASPER DRUG STORE AND GIFTS JASPER PHOTO CENTER S Kodak YOUR gH “Good Neighbor Pharmacy” Prescription Specialists “More Than You Can Imagine” 1 North Main Jasper, GA 706-692-6427 Richard F.
