This week in sports history &y Ethan Swiech December 17-December 23 December 17th: On this day one year ago, the Minnesota Vikings pulled off the greatest comeback in NFL history. The Vikings made their 1,000th game a memorable one by overcoming a 33- 0 halftime deficit to the Indianapolis Colts and prevailing in overtime, 36-33. Minnesota ignited its rally with three unanswered touch downs. Two of those scores came on Kirk Cousins passes, one each to K.J. Osborn and Justin Jefferson. K.J. caught 10 passes for 157 yards while J.J. made 12 catches for 123 yards. Cousins threw two more touchdowns in the final quarter, including a screen pass to running back, Dalvin Cook, that went for 64 yards. Cook’s electrifying touchdown was followed by a successfiil two-point attempt that forced the extra period. Indy went score less on its last seven possessions, including their only one of overtime. Cousins then en gineered a six-play, 60-yard march that led to Greg Joseph’s game-winning 40-yard field goal. The 11th year quarterback endured seven sacks to finish 34 of 54 for 460 yards. The Vikes also clinched the NFC North title with this victory. December 18th: On this day in 1983, the Seattle Seahawks made the playoffs for the first time in their eight-year history. The Seahawks clinched a postseason berth following a 24-6 win over the New England Patriots at the Kingdome. Quarterback, Dave Krieg, completed 13 of 21 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns. One of his scores was a 46-yarder to original Seahawk, Steve Largent, as the crafty vet made seven catches for 133 yards. Krieg also added a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the ground attack was bolstered by Kurt Warner. The rookie out of Penn State had 116 yards on 26 carries before finishing the regular season as the AFC’s top rusher. Seattle’s defense collected three sacks, the same number of takeaways and pitched a sec ond half shutout. December 19th: On this day in 1984, Buffalo Sabres head coach, Scotty Bowman, became the all-time winningest coach in NHL history with 691 victories. Bowman’s men defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-3, as every Buffalo goal came unanswered. Also on this same day, Wayne Gretzky became the youngest player in league history to reach 1,000 points. Gretzky buried two goals while tallying four assists as the Edmonton Oilers easily handled the Los Angeles Kings, 7-3. December 20th: On this day in 1983, Montreal Canadiens right winger, Guy Lafleur, became the 10th player in NHL history to net 500 goals. Lafleur met the milestone in the third period of Montreal’s 6-0 shutout of the New Jersey Devils. He retired following the 1984-85 campaign but returned to the game in 1988 before hanging it up for good in 1991. December 21st: On this day in 1948, the defending NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles used the first overall pick of the draft on University of Pennsylvania linebacker, Chuck Bednarik. “Concrete Charlie” spent his entire career in Eagle green from 1949 until 1962, playing 169 games over those 14 seasons. Bednarik also made 10 All-Pro squads and eight Pro Bowls while winning a pair of titles himself. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967 before joining the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame in 1987. Bednarik even became a member of the NFL 1950s All- Decade team as well as the 50th, 75th and 100th Anniversary All-Time squads. December 22nd: On this day in 1997, Scotty Bowman achieved another NHL first, this time as the bench boss of the Detroit Red Wings. Bow man became the first head coach to win 200 games apiece with three different franchises. After reaching that mark in both Montreal and Detroit, he got to 200 in the Motor City after the Wings bested the Boston Bruins, 4- 2. December 23rd: On this day in 1997, exactly five years after earning his 200th win, Chicago Bulls head coach, Phil Jackson, became the quick est to 500 victories, needing just 682 games to do it. The Bulls, behind Michael Jordan’s 27 points and Dennis Rodman’s 25 rebounds, posted a 94-89 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. Jackson completed his Chicago tenure by leading the Bulls to a sixth NBA title at the end of the 1997-98 campaign. Continued From Sports Page Racing Report good ending with Larson bat tling Logano to take the win. 3. Busch Clash at the LA Coliseum - The 1st half of the race saw some good ac tion with a few lead changes, and a decent amount of pass ing and battles for position. At the beginning of the sec ond half of the race is when the race really went downhill, however. Drivers would con stantly run into each other, causing one or more drivers to spin out. What made this even worse is that NASCAR did not add laps for caution in this race, making the race drag out a lot more than it should. All this chaos is due to both the LA Coliseum track being only a 14 mile long and there being 27 cars for this race. Since NASCAR will come back to this track next year, there should be less cars for this race to cause less chaos. 2. All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro - The only ex citing part was Larson mak ing his way from the back to the front on fresher tires. Suarez dominated at the start of the race before being passed by Larson on newer tires. If not for Larson’s pit strategy, Suarez probably would’ve led the whole race due to being really challeng ing to pass. When everyone was on equal tires, drivers could only go up through the field little and due to being only one real caution, the field got really strung out, making passing less likely to happen. We can only hope next year’s race here will be better. 1. Go Bowling at The Glen - This year, Watkins Glen was the worst of all the short tracks and road courses. This Gen 7 car is perfect for a track like Watkins Glen, but that is what makes the worst of this year. Throughout all the race, especially in the last 30 laps, there was little pass ing, the field would get really strung out, and drivers would have a REALLY difficult time passing whoever was in front of them due to dirty air and the cars being equal. Not much more to say and that’s when you know a race was boring. Next week, we will list what we thought to be the BEST races of the 2023 Cup season.
