Penney place out of town. I think, for that was many years ago, that it was a place where you could go to place, then pick up, or ders. Of course you had their catalogs from which to order. We also received in the mail the special Christmas Sears catalog. These catalogs were called out “Wish Books.” These would come in the mail at least two months before Christmas which would give us ample time to wear them out by making our wish list. Let me remind you that we were a family with little to no money and we, as children, realized that. We knew not to pester Mama with any wishing for pres ents. We also knew that we would get something and were glad and thankful for what we got. Our main enjoyment during this time was look ing through our Christmas catalogs, dog earring the pages on which were our most-wished for toys, never actually thinking we would receive them. But that was our fun. By the time Christmas rolled around we all had a few toys and two much-used Christmas catalogs. We were very happy with what we received be cause we had a lot of love in our home. Hope you have the same. A little magic at Jasper Lions meeting On Thursday, Dec. 14, The Jasper Lions Club welcomed Magician Carey Huddlestun to our meeting. Carey told us about becoming interested in magic through the magic sec tion in his local library when he was in third grade. He says he has just never outgrown it! We are so glad that he hasn’t because he entertained us with a delightful magic show that we all enjoyed. We witnessed tricks with ropes, cards and art. His most amazing trick was cutting himself in half with a rope and living to tell about it. Mr. Huddlestun spent about 5 years as a professional ma gician but did not like the business side of it. He loves music and has a Masters in Music Education. Carey is also retired Reference Librarian at Kennesaw State University. Maybe that is why he really enjoys performing his magic at libraries across the area. Mr. Huddlestun has kept his love of music too as he currently serves as a part time Music Minister at Parkway Baptist Church in Duluth, GA. Become a CASA volunteer. Many local children in foster care are waiting for a Court Appointed Special Ad vocate (CASA) volunteer to be by their side. CASA vol unteers are regular people — stay-at-home moms, retirees, teachers, or business people. All it takes is a heart and a willingness to speak up for a child’s best interest. We re cruit, screen, train and sup port people just like you. The gift of time as a vol unteer is one of the most valuable things you can give to impact the lives of our children. So many volunteers speak of how rewarding their time as a CASA has been. We hope you will consider making a resolution to be a light in the life of a child ex periencing foster care. You must at least be 21 years of age, able to pass a background check and suc cessfully complete 30 hours of training and 10 hours of courtroom observation. The next child advocate training session for Gilmer, Fannin and Pickens coun ties begins Tuesday, Janu ary 9.
