Race Recap - 2024 Iowa Corn 350
By Alex Korowotny
Racing Sports
Correspondent
Iowa Speedway is a track that the Xfin-
ity series has raced at for now 10 years,
but last weekend was the first time the Cup
series has raced in Iowa. So, was the re
cent repaving of the track’s comers a bad
move for the race or was it not as bad as we
thought it would be?
The race started with Larson on the
pole. He dominated most of Stage 1 before
getting passed by Blaney with 10 laps to go
in the stage. Blaney won Stage 1. Stage 2
started on lap 78 with Blaney still leading
after staying out during the caution. After
an unnecessary caution for Gragson getting
sideways, the race settled into a long green
flag ran with Blaney continuing to lead.
Green flag pit stops started on lap 164, but
before everyone made their pit stop, NA
SCAR threw out a caution for Hemric
tapping the wall in Turn 2. Everyone else
came in to make their pit stop, and on the
restart, Larson got the lead back and won
Stage 2. Stage 3 started on lap 219 with
Buescher now in the lead because he took
two tires. On the restart, Larson wrecked
after Suarez got loose underneath him and
turned him around. After the last caution of
the race, everyone made their last pit stop
and Blaney came out with the lead by tak
ing two tires. The race went green the rest
of the way and Blaney held on with his two
fresher tires to win at Iowa in front of 80

The 8U Dragons All Star team
battled it out in Gilmer County last
week in the District 5 Championship.
Our Dragons went out full of fire and
energy against Gilmer in game one
coming up with a loss. Following a
break our little Dragons played game
two against Fannin with a 15-14 win.
On Friday our boys battled hard with
Gilmer in game 1 with a big win.
The two teams battled one more
time for the championship coming

silver cup. Our boys represented the

Little Mystery
The Major League
Baseball season is ap
proaching the midway
point, and honestly, there’s
only one division race
remaining competitive.
There’s little mystery left
but hopefully, some drama
emerges during the sum
mer heat.
For now, only the Amer
ican League East contains
a hotly contested race be
tween New York (50-24)
and Baltimore (47-24).
Only one and a half games
separate those two rivals.
The western division
looks all but over already.
Seattle (43-31) holds a
commanding 8.5 game ad
vantage and no other team
in the West even has a win
ning record.
Cleveland (44-25) en
joys a comfortable five-
game edge on Kansas
City (41-32) followed by
Minnesota (40-32) in the
AL Central. This division
could get interesting, par
ticularly in the battles for a
wildcard playoff berth, but
the Guardians hold firm
control now.
Every division in the
National League is all but
decided. With only four
teams holding winning
records Philadelphia (47-
24), Atlanta (38-31), Mil
waukee (42-29), and Los
Angeles (44-29), the NL is
completely boring.
The Phillies lead the
East by eight games over
the oft-injured and incon
sistent Braves.
The Brewers have con
trolled the Central since
mid-April. Despite a hot
streak by St. Louis (35-
35), the Cardinals are only
at .500 with only marginal
chances of catching the
Brew Crew.
In the West and as ex
pected, the loaded Dodgers
have buried the rest of the
division teams and lead
San Diego (37-38) by eight
games. Even with injuries
to multiple key players, no
body is catching LA.
We aren’t through June
yet and MLB has few races
worth watching. The only
mystery remains in the AL
East and eventually in the
battles wildcard berths to
the postseason.
Should we as sports fans
turn our attention towards
football season already?
games each day.
Coach Reed said it was truly an
honor to take these young players to
battle for a championship.
He cannot wait till next season to
bring home the gold.

The Pickens County

a very busy start. They had
their first meet at the Chero

6. Everyone showed great
improvement on their times,
according to Coach Deb
Johnson. Their second meet
was two days later, once
again at Cherokee Aquatics.
The team then traveled to
Dawson County and com

Dawson counties at their lo
