Catherine M. Fletcher
Mother Catherine M. Fletcher was born on March
19, 1937, in Barnesville, Lamar County, Georgia, to the
late Mrs. Minnie Maude and the late Mr. Henderson
Taylor. At the age of eight, in
1945, she joined the Histori
cal West Mount Sinai Baptist
Church under the leadership
of Pastor D. F. Fuller.
Throughout her child
hood, Mother Fletcher was
active in the youth choir,
Sunday school, and usher
ministry. She fondly remem
bered assisting the elders
of the church, including her
grandparents, Deacon Fred
Williams, and Mother Ellen
Davis Williams, who were devoted members. Walk
ing to church and enjoying picnics on the lawn were
cherished memories from her youth.
She was educated in the Lamar County School
System and graduated from Barnesville Industrial
High School in 1954. She later attended trade school
in Elyria, Ohio, before returning to Barnesville in
1957. On March 21, 1959, she married the love of her
life, the late Arthur Fletcher, with whom she shared a
loving marriage for 52 years until his passing. Mother
Fletcher dedicated her professional life to education,
working at Gordon Grammar School and later with
the William Carter Company for a total of 31 years.
She was a hard worker and provided well for her
family. As a devoted church member for 79 years,
she participated in the Mother’s Ministry and the
Salt Ministry. Under the leadership of Pastor Waylon
T. Knight, she played a vital role in preserving the
church’s history by adding missing artifacts to the
collection.
On October 1, 2024, Mother Fletcher’s earthly
journey ended when the Lord whispered her name.
She departed this life and entered into eternal rest.
Mother Fletcher is survived by her children, Ronnie
(Fay) and Rodney (Veronica) Fletcher; grandchildren,
Dr. Jarrod (Dr. NaToya) Fletcher, Rondrikus Fletcher,
and Jeremy (Jekira) Fletcher; and great-grandchildren
Neva, Aiden, Brayden, Aubrey, and Kali Fletcher, who
affectionately called her “Sugarplum.” Sister in Law,
Christine Fletcher. She is also survived by a host
of cousins, friends, and staff at the Heritage Inn of
Barnesville. Her legacy of faith, love, and service will
be remembered by all who knew her.

GSC professors tackle
education reform in
their new book
Three Gordon State
College professors from
the School of Education,
Arts, and Humanities
led a book discussion
on their newly released
work, “Code Red: Conver
sations and Solutions for
an Educational System
in Crisis,” at the Barnes
ville campus Hightower
Library on Sept. 18.
Edited by
Drs. Joseph
R. Jones,
Anna Dunlap
Higgins-Har-
rell, and Julie
Little, “Code
Red: Conver
sations and
Solutions for
an Educa
tional System
in Crisis,” is
a collection
of essays
from writers
whose voices
represent
pre-service
teachers,
paraprofes-
sionals, veteran teachers,
teachers-turned-adminis-
trators, principals, deans
of initial certification
programs, and others.
The book is organized
into two sections: the
first addresses the hard
truths faced in the field
of teaching, while the
second offers tangible
solutions to these chal
lenges.
“We want the words
of our collected authors
to be catalyst generating
productive conversa
tions about what needs
addressing in the Ameri
can education system,”
Higgins-Harrell said. “We
also want the voices of
hope to be heard, those
who see the situation as
it is, but who also see a
way forward.”
The concept for “Code
Red” originated from
Jones, whose nearly
three decades of experi
ence in education have
given him a unique
perspective on the stark
differences between past
and present challenges
in the field. He noted that
throughout his career,
the pressing question
has always been, “How
are we going to change
schools?”
“Our goal is to spark
meaningful change and
encourage people to crit
ically reflect on what’s
happening
in today’s
schools,”
Jones said.
Jones
recognized
that bring
ing his
book idea
to fruition
required
the exper
tise of two
colleagues.
He sought
out Little,
whose
extensive
experience
in schools
made her
the ideal contributor to
address in-classroom
teaching challenges.
Recognizing the impor
tance of a strong edito
rial voice, Jones also
brought Higgins-Harrell
on board, explaining,
“Anna brings us all
together.” He praised her
as a phenomenal editor,
integral to shaping the
final product.
“There isn’t a single
solution, and we can’t
fix education overnight.
But understanding where
people are now gives us
a starting point,” Little
said.
