(Jt) ON THE BEAT (JtO
Compiled from a summary of incident reports
completed by Lamar deputies during the period Oct.
2-9, 2024.
On Oct. 3, Lt. Shane Moore was dispatched to 1402
Old Hwy. 41 in reference to a 47-year-old male who
had been found unresponsive and not breathing. Fire
units and EMS were already on the scene and said the
victim was obviously deceased and had been down
for awhile.
He located body of Thomas Melvin and confirmed
the death. His fiancee, Kristin Broski, had found him
when she got home from work. His mother, Brenda
Lovelady, reported he had been up and moving about
90 minutes earlier.
The scene was turned over to investigator Shannon
Williamson and deputy coroner Chris Minchew.
On Oct. 5, Dep. Mike Womack met with Jamie Hord
who said he entered his residence at 199 Lanette
Circle the previous evening and is mother Hellen Har
ris and brother James Pippin, 40, were sitting on the
couch. There was one place left on the couch but the
family dog was laying there so Hord pushed the dog
off the couch.
This angered Pippin who Hord said punched him
on the left side of his face causing a laceration inside
his mouth that required a trip to the hospital. Harris
made Pippin leave the residence. Hord was referred
to C1D and magistrate court.
On Oct. 5, Dep. Womack was on routine patrol
when he pulled through the parking lot at Simmons
Diesel Performance at the intersection of Veterans
Parkway and Yatesville Road. Near the ice machine,
he spotted a pink overnight bag. The bag was un
zipped and he could see women’s items inside. He
found a Georgia ID, social security card and food
stamp card in the name of Crystal Sheree Clay, 29. Her
listed address of 120 Liberty Circle in Spalding County
was checked but she no longer lived there. Further
investigation revealed Clay had been released from
the Lamar jail on Sept. 7 and listed her address as
‘homeless’.
Womack checked all the local motels to no avail so
Clay was listed on GCIC as missing.
On Oct. 5, Dep. Rachel Harris and Dep. Barclay
Banta were dispatched to a home at 250 Van Buren
Rd. where a woman reported her 26-year-old son had
become upset for some unknown reason and had
broken a living room window. She did not want her
son arrested.
The deputies located the son in a shop on the
property. He was calm and agreed to stay in the shop
for awhile.
On Oct. 5, Dep. Harris met with a Clements Ford
Road man who had received threatening texts from
phone number 864.774.5302. The message said the
man owed money and if he did not pay ‘he would pay
in blood’. The texter had information on the victim
and his family members. The victim called the num
ber and a male with a foreign accent threatened to
hire a hit man. The investigation continues.
On Oct. 5, Dep. Teater Mason was on a traffic stop
along Hwy. 18 West and about to open the door of his
patrol car when he saw a headlight and hesitated.
Had he exited, he would have been hit by a moped.
He finished his stop and tracked down the moped and
stopped it.
The driver, David Mobley Harris, 24, of 541 Pied
mont Rd. provided a permit but it had expired over
a year ago. Harris went to jail charged with driving
without a license and the moped was impounded.
On Oct. 6, Dep. Mason was traveling east on Hwy.
36 East when he spotted a black BMW in front of him
driving at a slow speed and weaving over the road
way. He used his camera to document the driving and
then pulled the vehicle over. He approached the BMW
and asked the driver for his license at which point the
driver handed him the car keys. He later provided a
Mexican license which identified him as Pedro Zavala
Granda, 29, of Stone Mountain.
Granda’s eyes were glossed over and he smelled
of alcohol. He admitted to drinking ‘about six beers’.
He did poorly on roadside testing, blew a .168 on a
portable breath testing device and was taken to jail
where he refused a blood test. He was charged with
driving without a license, two counts DU1, DU1 (child
endangerment), reckless driving and failure to main
tain lane. The BMW was turned over to his wife and
12-year-old daughter.
