President Gilman, explaining
the scope of the instition to which
Mr. Carnegie has given $10,000,-

Ninety-eight I’er Cent.
There is a fascination about big
profits to a business man. But
the conservative and cautious
trader prefers to have the lesser
per cent, of interest and the larger
per cent, of safety in his invest
ments. There is no business man
who would not consider it a sound
proposition to invest in an enter
prise in which absolute loss" wi.s
impossible and which of ninety
eight chances in a hundred of a
rich profit. The statistics of cures
effected by Dr. Pierce’s Golden
Medical Discovery show that
ninety-eight per cent, of cases of
“weak lungs” can be absolutely
cured. Almost if not all forms
of physical weakness may be traced
to starvation. Starvation taps the
strength. The body is just as
much starved when the stomach
cannot extract nutrition from the
food it receives as when there is
no food. “Weak lungs,” bron
chial affections, obstinate cough,
call for nourishment. “Golden
Medical Discovery” supplies that
nourishment in its most condensed
and assimilable form. It makes
“weak lungs” strong, by strength
ening the stomach and organs of
digestion which digest and dis
tribute the food, and by increas
ing the supply of pure blood.
Two Washburn College (Kansas)
boys were recently called before
the faculty and lectured soundly
for having prayed that the Lord
would give their foot bail team
strength and skill to win the
game. The boys were told that
their prayers were sacrilegious.
Rev. J. S. Smith, an Episcopal
clergyman, has come to the defense
of the boys. He says they did
right. Men pray for success in
war, in business and in all of their
serious endeavors, and it was per
fectly proper for the boys to pray
for success in their games.
SOMETHING THAT WILL DO YOU
GOOD.
We know of no way in which we can
be of more service to our readers than
to tell them of something that will be
of real good to them. For this reason
we want to acquaint them with what
we consider one of the very best reme
dies on the market for coughs, colds,
and that alarming complaint, croup.
We refer to Chamberlain’s Cough Rem
edy. We have list'd it with such good
results in our family so long that it lias
become a household necessity. By its
prompt use we haven’t any doubt but
that it has time and again prevented
croup. The testimony is given upon
our own experience, and we suggest
that our readers, especially those who
have small children, always keep it in
their homes as a safeguard against
croup.—Camden (S. C.) Messenger.

, WHAT IS HOME?!
Recently a London magazine sent out/1000 inquiries on the
1 question, “What is home?” In selecting the classes fo respond to the
question it was particular to see that every one was represented.
The poorest and the richest were given ah equal opportunity to ex
press their sentiments. Out oi Soo replies received, seven gems
! were selected as follows:
i . Home—A world of strife shut out, a world of love shut in.
2. Hollie- - T* ie l^ ace where the small are great, and the
great are small.
3- H^Rte—The father’s kingdom, the in'tiler’s world, and the
child’s paradi>fc.
Home—The place where we grumble most and are treated
the best.
5. Home—The center of our affections round which heart’s
best wishes twine.
6. Home —The place where the stomach get three square
meals daily and our hearts a thousand.
7. Home —The only place on earth where the faults and fail
ings of humanity are hidden under the sweet mantle of charity.
The Sciara Worm of the Norway Forests.
In the deep, pine forests of Norway the sciara worm migrates
in summer in search ol food. Each worm is about a tenth of an
inch long and as wide as a fine needle. When traveling millions of,
them cluster, forming a line over 40 feet long and several inches thick,
resembling a huge slowly crawling snake. The natives lay their
clothing on the ground in front of these trains. If the procession
passes over, it is a good sign, but if it goes around it is an evil omen.
In writhing over or around sticks and stones these slowly moving
trains often break in fragments and are again reformed and move on.
How To Make a Waterproof Tarpaulan.
It often happens that a fanner is caught in a shower with his
wagon full of cotton or grain or fruit of some kind, and cannot reach
shelter. At shell a time a few square yards of tarpaulan or oiled
cloth is worth many times its cost to him. Such a waterproof cloth
can be easily made at home by lap stitching together a few breadths
of Boz. cotton duck. After stitching it together put it in a tub of
cold water and saturate it thoroughly for one or two hours. Then
take it out; hang it smooth in a vertical position; begin at the top
and work down, painting, while the cloth is wet, both sides thor
oughly with hot linseed oil and lampblack. The lampblack fills the
pores of the cloth and the oil preserves the fiber from decay. Such
a waterproof will last indefinitely and is also useful to throw over a
hay stack, or to use as an A tent when the boys on the farm go for a
few days on a hunting or a fishing trip to the woods.
The Difference Between Summer and Winter Pruning.
Winter pruning tends to produce wood, summer pruning does
not. To prune a fruit tree in winter means its earliest energies will
be devoted to the restoration of the disturbed balance between root
and top. On the other hand, alter a midsummer pruning the tree
seems able to readjust itself the same season, and therefore the next
season’s fruit bearing is not disturbed. Watersprouts are less apt to
follow a summer pruning. An aftergrowth sometimes follows
heading-in done before active growth lias ceased. By judicious
pruning we may control the shapes of orchard trees to a certain ex
tent, making low and compact heads.

Gentlemen: I write this testimonial from a sense of duty, having tested

radical improvement. After using one bottle her Asthma has disappeared and
she is entirely free from all symptoms. I feel that I can consistently recom
