Mrs. Roust a pit inaugurated u series "l' ftft'moon garden parties ye- ten la v aft eriiM.m in t he grounds at the rear of the White House and nearly <stX> guests attended, most of them remaining the entire time from 1 to(i o’clock. Tents and awnings were scattered about i lie grounds and refreshments were served from tables beautifully de corated with flowers and presided over by pretty girls. The show was enjoyed by as many outside of the iron railing surrounding the grounds as were inside. 'l'liis afternoon there was an other garden party. It was at the ■ Spanish Legation, which lias spa cious grounds. Although it was a notable society event it was also intended to make money, and did, which was turned over to St. Agnes’ Industrial Home, an institution in which the Duchess d’Arcos (formerly Miss Lowry), wife of the Spanish Minister, has been much interested for some years. Neither tlie Spanish Minister nor his wife in town, but the legation and grounds were t urned over to the patronesses of the fete. Some of the prettiest girls in society were in charge of the booths, where everything including the styles in Parisian millinery, could be bought, and where everybody who attended was made to buy. Ever since Senator Simmons has been in Washington it has been known around the \\ bite House tluit ho and Arthur Simmons, the veteran colored door-keeper, were old and very warm friends. Some body asked Arthur why, and he I said: “Why, Senator Simmons is almost related to me. My father was a slave of the father of Senator Simmons, and we have known each ot her since we were boys and play ed together. He is a good man and 1 am proud to be his friend.’’ Representative “Charlie” to almost everybody around the Capitol—Joy, of Mo., accompanied his wife to Atlantic City the other day on his way back he spent a night alone in Philadelphia, and thereby bungs this story, which he tells: “After registering in a hotel, the clerk after a glance at the signature, said affably: ‘\\ ill you have your baggage sent up, Mr. Joy?’ Yes, I replied, handing him a package containing my pajamas and a toothbrush. ‘You said you wished to be called at 6 o’clock?’ Yes. Do you mind pay ing in advance, Mr. Joy,’ he re- marked in a tone that might have been suspicious or apologetic, ac cording to the humor a man hap pened to be in. I told him I didn’t mind, and paid gladly, con vinced that for once I was not charged extra for being a Con -1 gressman.” Representative Talbert, of S. C. does not impress you as a man of poetical ideas, but as a eulogy of his late colleague, Mr. Stokes, he i said: Yea lam almost constrain ;ed to repeat the words of a warm I friend of Tom Moore, said of him — ‘lf it were the last drop in a well, \ And I, gasping on the brink, ‘Tis to vhee, Tom Moore, That I would drink.’ ” The first, concert of the new Washington Sympony Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Regi nald De Koven had Paderewahi as the soloist. Either attraction would have filled the theatre. The combined attraction turned away many, who could not get even standing room. THE BARNE3VILLE RE WS-GAZET*! 'c- A THURSDAY, MAY 8, 1902. Secretary Moody, and Admiral Dewey, were present. Mine. Cambon, wife of the French Embassador, who comes especially to preside over the French Embassy during the social entertainments that will be con nected with the unveiling of the monument to Kochamheau, reach ed Washington this week. Site will not remain more than six months, possibly not so long. Speak ing of entertainments con nected with the Rochambeau Statue, Government officials are hunting up precedents to assist them in deciding upon the nature of the official entertainment of the official representatives of the French government who will come to Washington. Only one feature of the entertainment has yet been definitely determined upon. That is a banquet at the White House with something like a hundred! guests will include the present governors of the thirteen original States, representatives of the patriotic societies, eminent states men, jurists and soldiers. As the French party will bring no ladies the danquet will be a stag affair. In order to give the ladies a chance a proposition to hold a reception at the White House is under con sideration, but it is not yet certain that it will be adopted. Everybody knows the modest opinion the average Senator has of the Senate, but it isn’t often it is expressed quite so freely us in a colloquy between Senators Cock rell and Spooner, on the iloor of the Senate. Mr. Cockrell led off by saying: “The Senate is the greatest legislative body in the world.” To which Mr. Spooner replied: “Oh, no! this is not the greatest legislative body in the world. It is only a part of one of the greatest legislative bodies, but I will not dispute that it is the greatest part. In fact, I think we all admit that fact.” Those Senators who have been making set speeches on the Philip pine bill they have a kick coming to them when Senator Depew, probably talkative man in Con gress, pokes fun at them for talk ing. Senator Depew said to one them : “I see by the papers that in Chicago they are boasting because they had 145,000 miles of wind. If this debate on the Phil ippines keeps us much longer, Chicago won’t be in it with the Senate.” WANTS OTHERS TO KNOW. “I have used DeWitt’s Little Early Risers for constipation and tropid liver and they are all right. I am glad to indorse them for I think when we find a good thing we ought to let others know it.” writes Alfred Heinze, Quincy, 111. They never gripe or dis tress. Sure, safe pills. Jxo. H.
