backed by a pool of s2so,ooo.ooocomposed of J. Pierpont Morgan, Marshall
Field. John J. Mitchell, President Illinois Trust Cos., Moore Bros, and several
other capitalists, for the purpose of putting prices very much higher. We

| All doctors have tried to cure CA
TARRH by the use of powders, acid

heir powders dry upon the mueuous

Baby Deserted by Her Mother.
Rev. Mr. Lingle, Presbyterian
pastor at Dalton, the other day
boarded the train with two babies
in his arms. One of them was his
own sweet baby, the other a poor
little deserted thing. She will not
he two years old until September,
and yet her mother deserted her a
year ago. Poor little child; she
lias been sadly neglected, some
time being left alone for hours,
crying herself to sleep. What can
be sadder than for a mother to de
sert her child? She is a sweet,
bright, attractive baby.
If any one could have seen her
happiness today in the baby cot
tage of the Decatur Orphans’
Home, loved and cared for by
Christian hearts, and playing with
the twenty other wee tots, they
would have thanked Clod for such
institutions. They are doing for
tin* neglected ones what Jesus
said: “Sutler the little children
to come unto me.”
DANGEROUS IF NEGLECTED.
Burns, cuts and other wounds often
fail to heal properly if neglected and
become troublesome sores. DeWitt’s
.Witch Hazel Salve Salve prevents such
consequences. Even where delay has
aggravated the injury DeWitt’s Witch
Hazel Salve effects a cure. “1 had a
running sore on my leg thirty years,”
says H. C, Hartly, Yankoetown, Ind.
“After useing many remedies, 1 tried
DeWitt’s Witch Hazel Salve. A few
boxes healed the sores.” Cures all
diseases. Piles yield to it at once.

Brigandage In Bulgarin.
Bulgaria and Macedonia are the
hotbeds of brigandage, known as
such for ages. The territory is
mountainous, crossed by no regu
lar thoroughfares except the paths
worn in the rocks by feet of the
carivans of centuries. These dis
tricts are populated by Bulgarians,
Albanians and Turks, living in
small towns among the mountains
where a hard and precocious living
can be wrung from the stony soil
only under the most favorable
conditions. With little' or no
protection from the government,
and subject to repeated aud heavy
assessments upon their scanty
crops and stragling herds from the
roving bands of brigands, whose
strongholds are in the same moun
tain fastnesses, it is not a surprise
that the people become restless
and learn to look upon the brigand
leader as a great and powerful
man. Fathers apprentice their
sons to these leaders of lawless
ness and crime to learn the pro
fession, with the earnest hope and
prayer that by their prowess and
strength they, too, in due time
may be at the head of a robber
band of their own. The region,
moreover, is especially adapted to
brigandage, because it is the meet
ing-place of Europe and Asia,
where lawlessness and rapine are
fostered by the intense race rival
ry and hatred that consequently
prevails—Woman’s Home Com
panion.

Prevention is better Urn cure, and
yet a remedy like Gooch’s Mexican

cure after the lungs begins to waste
