WHEN ESTRALA PALMA
COMES TO CIENFUEGOS.
Mrs. Corinne Elder Lewis Writes
of the Condition in Cuba.
Cienfuoob, Cuba,
May, 25, 1902.
I would love to draw aside Caha’s
[curtain and let you see theplay ol
t his fast changing drama for we
are making History these days and
we are glad, very glad. Shall I
tell you about, the time when
Estrala Palma came to Cienfugos?
That morning I was awakened by
a call of “get up, get up, don’t
you know Estrala Palma comes
today?”
At last we were rushing along
the thickly packed streets in true
American style: the men had long
; since gotten tired ol waiting for
us and so we three girls were left
to fight our way as best we could
through fhe crowd, but “little
Fannie,” had the true Macon push
and gallantly did our 1 ittle leader
escort us on to Austerlitz, push,
push, push and on we went hear
ing on every side “Americanas,
Americanas.” At last we were
down at the wharf on “our ship ’
waiting for the boat which would
bring Australa Palma from Santi
ago. With a hanging of guns,
booming of cannons, flying of
flags, and shouting of people, here
she came sweeping along like a
conqueror; so quickly did she turn
into the narrow channel and so
excited were all that before we
knew it Bhe had run into the
opposite shore knocking down a
miniature house in her run away,
and many were the tugs that
united to pull her off the sands.
At last, “here she comes,” “boom!
boom ! 1 boom 1!!” till one wished
the earth would open and swallow
them. “Estrala Palma! Estrala
Palma! viva Cuba! 1 vivaCnbal!!”
rang from house to]) to house top,
from shore to shore, while the
deep bellowing of big ships and
the shrill screaming of little boats
joined in the chorus.
“Come on, wo must see the presi
dent,” and we were off pushing,
jostling, hurrying on. Suddenly
I was stopped by a screaming,
yelling negro and if 1 bad been
seized bv a maniac, 1 could not
have been more surprised. What
the matter was 1 could not tell,
but glancing at our leader to see
what she would do in the crisis, 1
saw her tiny, white hand rise in
the air; for one moment there was
a Mash of a diamond in the sun
and then that little hand came
down on the face of the negro, and
on she went. With my eyes on
her, I pushed on and then her
passage was stopped by a negro,
who held her by the wrists but
with eyes Mashing and angrily
exclaiming, “no importa a me," she
pulled away while I—poor me! —
it is a wonder I was not black and
blue for the women behind me
played the drum with both lists
on my back. but“lnirrahl there is
the president,” and there he was.
bowing and smiling to the yelling
crowd. A strong, noble face it was,
a promise for the future of Cuba.
Eater on in the morning, we
were on one of the balconies of the
hotel and looked down on the pro
cession. First came the president,
walking in t he midst of his escorts,
then a crowd of people, then the
remnant of the Cuban army as it
was during the bitter struggle,
uniformless, in disorder, on tiny,
poorly-fed ponies, the “Rural
Guards,” in all the splendor of
their uniforms, bo'llind them the
firemen, their red shirts showing
bright on the back-ground of black
their axes shining in the hot sun,
still behind them the band, and
then carriage, after carriage,
empty, and at last but not least,
Ob! not least, came that procea
eeasion of darkies.
That was a great day for Cien
fuegos. the day the president came.
I cannot help but wonder if that
was the first rumbling of a storm
BARNESVILLE NEWS-GAZETTE, THURSDAY, JUNE 23, 1902.
that some day will break the
“Pearl of the Antilles,” and if she,
like our beautiful Southland, must
sulier the pangs of a race war.
June, 4, 1902 —Only five short
days have passed since the Ameri
can occupation came to an end;
and look at Cienfuegos now.
Already the air that blows pure
from the bay, has become tainted
carrying on its wings disease and
pestilence. Alreadythe streets are
left uncleaned and are becoming
ditier day by day.
There is an uneasiness, an unrest
about the whole city, a listening,
a waiting for that som<#iing that
is to come. Every night men are
held up on the public streets and
their purses demanded. One of
the millionaires has received a
letter saying that if lie did not
send the writer $20,000, he would
lose his life. But saddest of all,
two little children have been kid
napped. Oh! the anguish and
longing of the mothers for those
little ones they cannot find.
The president has sent down
detectives, but of what avail 1
Oh! these cowardly policemen!
Two saw the ransom money given
and yet the rascals escaped. Five
families have already left the city.
What will happen next! With
what a deep pity do we look upon
poor Cuba, her own worst enemy.
Where are her “great expecta
tions” now, when women fear to
leave thier homes and hug their
children to their hearts, thhinking
of those two mothers whose hearts
are desolate and lonely, who
yearn and long for the little ones
stolen away. Oh! these cowardly
policemen! Why can’t they “be
up and doing,” they will run at
their own shadow 1 Adjoining
our house is the post-office and
nightly there is set to watch it, a
policeman. That he may not grow
tired of his wearisome rounds, he
puts out an easy chair and when the
“wee small hours” begin to creep
up, he seeks repose upon this self
same chair. One night it happen
ed that Prof. F forgot to turn
out the lights till after he retired
and so he slipped up to the front
hall, softly he opened the front
door and peered out to see how our
watchman (?) was enjoying the
night. There he was snoozing
away, dreaming of the angels or
ghosts perhaps, for Prof. F—
just leaned over and yelled in his
sleeping ear. “Here there—get out
of that!” There was a Mash of
proud uniform, of pistol and club
that and scared policeman shot
around the corner as if Satan and
his angels were after him. What
will the harvest be!

BE WISE IN TIME.
Many parents do not know that their
child is sickly amt cross and fretful,
simply because they fail to give it some
of that splendid remedy called Mother’s
Worm Syrup, to kill and expel from its
little stomach and bowels the worms,
that are the cause of its distress.
Worms have brought many a little
loved one to a bed of sickness and to
its grave that a 25 cent bottle of this
remedy would have saved.

Tbe Sweetness of a Smile.
Blessed be the men and women
who scatter sunshine as they go.
They are the harbingers of happi
ness and the predominent chord
in the concert of content.
That one who causes you to for
get, for a minute, % weight of a
sorrow and leads you into the
broad sunshine of happiness is
greater, by far, than he who piles
up for himself riches of silver and
precious stones. ,
A single rose and a single smile
will do more to lighten the cares
that infest the day that a bouquet
of hot house beauties that come to
you bathed in tears.
The man who turns your un
willing eyes to the rising sun ac
complishes more for your peace of
mind than all those who bid you
seek content in the falling
shadows of the night. A single
ray of sunshine will dispel a
world of gloom, and the goblins
of grief will scatter like chaff
before the wind at the sound of
rippling coming strait from a
heart of joy.
