TAX RATES IN CITIES AND
TOWNS OF GEORGIA.
People who have advantages
have to pay for them. A few years
ago Barnesville had a lower tax
rale than we have today, hut we
had no electric light plant, no
water system, and only a small
school building. Many other im-
provements have been made in
public utilities and in the side
walks and streets.
Barnesville today is vastly dif
ferent from the Barnesville of even
10 years ago, and the citizens who
have led in these improvements
and those who have aided in Hu
good work have built monuments
for themselves which will not soon
be forgotten.
And yet the tax rate of Barnes
ville compares favorably with ite
rate of other cities of tie- state.
The following table will be of
interest:

ALWAYS KEEP COOL.
The iiwfull disater which occurr
ed at the National Baptist Conven
tion of negroes in Birmingham.
Ala., last Friday (‘veiling should
be a valuable lesson to white peo- ;
pie as well as negroes everywhere.
The cry of “quiet” which was
understood to be a erv of “fire” j
resulted in a .stampede and more
than one hundred negroes were
crushed to death and many more !
more or less seriously injured.
The vast congregation became'
wild and a shocking calamity was |
the result.
Such an alarm is likely to be
given to almost any assembly of
people and then above all other
times, people should control
themselves and not become excit
ed. When such emergencies
arise it would be rare that injuries
resulted, if people would remain
cool and deliberately plan for
escape.
The Birminghrm affair was one
of most deplorable of the kind
ever known, and yet it was abso
lutely without any cause. It
teaches n most valuable lesson.
A few more negro conventions
similar to the one held in Birming
ham last week and t he race problem
in the South would Im> solved.
The ministers of Atlanta have
threatened to form ,a boycott
among the churches against the
Sunday papers. This would be
a worthy cause but it will not be
successful however.
The Savannah Press remarks
that the taxpayers of the country
would like to know if those sham
battles up on the New England
coasts will a4d to the pension
list.

ELECTION NEXT WEDNESDAY
Tne state election occurs next
Wednesday, October 1. It, will be
a very quiet election, as there is
no contest, except for one office,
but it. is hoped that a good vote
will bo polled throughout the state.
The only contest is for the un
expired time of Hoil. If. T. Lewis,
associate justice of the Supreme
court. For this office, there are
four candidates, namely, Judge
.1. S. Candler, Judge R. B. Rus
sell, Judge John P. Boss and Col.
Julian Williamson.
Several of these cadidates* ai*e
quite active and may develop
considerable strength in different
sections of the state. It seems
probable that Judge Candler will
be elected, but there is strong
opposition to him in many quar
ters.
Pike county should poll a good
vote next Wednesday. Remem
ber the day and go to the polls
and vote the official democratic
ticket.
The elections come oil in a short
while and the candidates tor the
supreme court bench are putting
in a lot of hard work.
Spalding's political muddle con
tinues to grow thicker as the time
of elect ion approaches.
Barnesville continues to main
tain her place as the best cotton
market in this section.
We bespeak for our advertisers
the confidence and trade of our
readers. Read their “ads'’ care
fully and you will find it to your
interest.
Governor Candler is receiving a
deal of censure for the manner in
which he distributes his plums.
The censure comes from those
who are not receiving the fruit.

BEWARE OF THE KNIFE.
No profession has advanced more rap
idly of late than surgery, but it should
not be used except when absolutely
necessary. In cases of piles for example
it is seldom needed. DeWitt’s Witch
Hazel Salve cures quickly and perma
nently. Unequalled for cuts, bruises,
wounds, skin diseases. Accept no coun
terfeits. “I was so troubled with bleed
ing piles that I lost much blood and
strength,” says J. C. Philips, Paris, 111.
