THIEVES STEAL*
HORSE AND BUGGY
tom AM) DICK JACKSON AND
HARRY SHELL. THREE OF
THE YOt XGKST CRIMINALS
ON RECORD.
Tom and Dick Jackson and
Harry Shell are three of the bold
est and most youthful criminals
on record in the annals of crime
in this county. Saturday after
noon Jack Merritt rode a horse,
tiie property of Mr. J. E. Crawley,
to the city from Milner and tied
it to a hitching post. These three
little negroes stole the horse, got
a buggy belonging to Mr. Car
michael, of Jackson, and pro
ceeded to ride to their hearts
content.
They were absent all Saturday
night and Sunday. It is suppos
ed that they rode all night and
next day, as they were seen driving
around the town Saturday after
ternoon and it has been ascertain
ed that they were seen at places
several miles from town next day.
They brought the buggy back
Sunday, after having carried all
their colored friends to ride and
unhitched the horse, replaced the
saddle on him and turned him loose
or rode him out into the country
several miles where he was found
by a negro man and taken in
charge.
Bailiff Garlington and others
began working on the case and
succeeded in locating the horse
Monday afternoon, somewhat
worse for wear.
These young thieves are very
small pieces of humanity and
appear to be about 12 or 18 years
old, although they may be a good
deal older —at any rate they give
promise of being thorough-bred
rogues and should he dealt with
as the law prescribes.

An example of the mental
havoc wrought by extreme expos
ure and privation is furnished by
the case of Capt. Joseph E. Max
field of the Signal Corps, who
for six months has been in Alaska,
says the Washington Post. In
the early spring Capt. Maxfield
left Valdez and traveled about
300 miles to the north for the pur
pose of looking over the ground
and outlining the work to be per
formed by the Signal Corps dur
ing the summer. Then, with but
a single Indian guide for a com
panion, the captain started back
by boat, and endured terrible pri
vations and suffering before he
finally returned. A few days ago
the War Department received a
telegram, stating that Capt. Max
field was beset with the hallucina
tion that there was a conspiracy
directed against his life, and it
was suggested that the officer
should be returned to the United
States as soon as possible. Orders
were sent forward from the War
Department directing Capt. Max
field to return to his home to re
cuperate frbm what, it is hoped,
is only, a temporary lapse of his
mental faculties. The Signal
Corps lias not enough officers for
its work in Alaska, and the loss
of Capt. Maxfield is much regret
ted .
