In the six day bicycle races the pace tells terribly at the end. Man after man falls out exhausted. The victor wabbles wearily over the line. In the business race it's the same. Man after man drops out exhausted. The success ful man is often a dyspeptic, unable to enjoy success. When the stomach is diseased there is not enough nutrition assimilated to sustain the l>ody and re pair the daily waste of tissues. The result is weakness, tending to collapse. Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery cures diseases of the stomach and other organs of digestion and nutrition. We the Grana Jury chosen and sworn for the April term, 1904, of Pike Superior Court, having fin ished our investigations and other work that has been brought to our attention, desire to make the following general presentments: Our work has been as thorough as we were able to make it, and we are pleased to note the fact that crime in our county seems to be on the decrease, as a smaller number of violations of the law has been presented for our con sideration. This we trust is an in dication of a higher regard for law and order, better citizenship and less litigation. We have elected W. C. Sims to be notary public of the 55th Dis trict G. M., to fill the place made vacant by the removal of It. W. McGinty from the district; also W. A. Whatley to fill the vacancy caused by the removal of J. S. McDaniel from the county, who has notary public of the 605th district. We have also elected S. S. Bar rett and J. M. Means to be mem bers of the board of education to succeed T. M. Allen and S. S. Barrett, whose terms of office as members of said board have expir ed. Upon •examination we find the dockets of the justices of the peace and notaries public generally in good condition and kept in accor dance with the law, but in a few cases we find some errors and fail ures to comply with the law. To them we have called the attention of the officers in whose dockets they appear. Our examination of the books and records of the Ordinary, Clerk of the Superior Court, Judge of the County Court, Sheriff and County Commissioners has been entirely satisfactory to our bony, ft appears that these officers have in their offices all the records that the law requires of them, and that these records are neat and well kept. We recommend that the salary of the Judge of the County Court bo fixed at $ too per annum. We find the books of the county treasurer neatly and correctly kept, with proper vouchers for all amounts paid out by him. We find he has received from all sources, including $2,000 of borrowed mon ey, since last report the sum of $16,127.85, and disbursed the sum of $9,655,74 leaving a balance on hand, April 4, 1904, of $6,572.01. We find the county farm in a better condition than we have ever known it before. We find on the farm six male and two female paupers, who seem to bo well cared for and well satisfied. We find the buildings neat and well kept, the farm in uhigh state of cultivation, sixty acres in corn, forty acres being prepared for cot ton, ten in wheat and five in oats. We commend M. J. W. Milner for his efficient management of the farm. We find the sanitary condition of tlie jail to be very bud, and recomend that the county com missioners have some necessary repairs made at once, and that a veranda be added to the front of Cotton Must Have Potash Potash is an essential plant food which must be added as a fertilizer them free to any farmer who ailta us for them. We find our court-house in an unsanitary condition, and recom mend that the county commissio ners employ a janitor who will clean the court house and who will keep it clean and in a sani tary condition in the future. We endorse and repeat the recommendation of a former grand jury that our representative use his best efforts to secure the pas sage of an act to pension J. I’. Ballard who was a gallant confed erate soldier hut who has lost his eye sight since the war b.y an un fortunate accident and lias been totally blind for 29 years. We have examined the pension list and ordered the name of John A. Kitchen stricken there from on the ground that he is now a citi zen of thejstate if Alabama. We have examined the hooks of the county school commissioner and find proper vouchers for all money disbursed by him. We endorse the action of the democratic executive committee of oliis county in calling a mass meeting of the citizens of the county to discuss the question of better roads. In taking leave of the court we tender to his Honor, E.J. Reagan and to our Solicitor, Mr. Blood worth, our thanks for their kind ness and courtesy to our body, al so to our worthy foreman for his kind considerations of our body. We recommend that these pre sentments be entered upon the minutes of the Court and publish ed in the The Pike County Jour nal, the Barnesville Gazette and Pike County Times, and that each of these papers be paid $6 for said publication. C. T. Tyler, Foreman. Rheumatism * Is Not a SKin. Disease* Most people have an idea that rheumatism is contracted like a cold, that the damp, chilly air penetrates the muscles and joints and causes the terrible aches and pains, or that it is something like a skin disease to be rubbed away with lini ment or drawn out with plasters; but Rhuematistn originates in the blood and is caused by Urea, or Uric Acid, an irritating, corroding poison that settles in mus cles, joints and nerves, producing inflammation and soreness and the sharp, cutting pains peculiar to this distressing disease.
