The Story of the Big
House on the Hill
Every town has its “big house on
the hill”:—a rich man who has be
come financially independent and is
perhaps the envy of those around
him.
But the base of all this prosperity
has been thrift. He has banked his
money—then invested it wisely with
the cooperation of his banking con
nections.
Yes, the big house on the hill is built
on the sound foundation of THRIFT.

ATTEND LAMAR COUNTY FAIR
The Lamar County Fair will open Tuesday of next
week, October 10th, the opening day being designated by
the fair authorities as Lamar County Day, when it is ex
pected that all the school faculties and children of the
county will be present and when it is hoped every family
in the county will be liberally represented. The fair is a
county enterprise and its success should be insured by the
patronage which the citizenship of the county will freely
and voluntarily give it during that day alone.
The exhibits in the various departments and the enter
tainment winch the program for the day and other fea
tures will afford will be sufficient to satisfy every person,
young or old, who may be present. It will be a great day
and evidently a great throng will be at the fair. Y"ou will
be missed and you will miss something which you may
deeply regret if you are not there. See the detailed pro
gram elsewhere. So, when the gates to Summers Field
are thrown open, when the bands begin to play and the
big and beautiful parade begins you should by all means
be in the crowd. The admission price for the day is 25
cents for grown people and 10 cents for children. Let
every Lamar county citizen be at the fair next Tuesday
to greet each other and to welcome the hosts of visitors
from adjoining counties.
It is going to be a GREAT DAY.
The Fair will continue through Saturday of next week.
CENTENNIAL BIG SUCCESS
The Centennial Anniversary, cele
brated by Zebulon and Pike county,
at Zebulon last Wednesday, Thurs
day and Friday, was a tremendous
success, culminating Friday with an
event that would have been a credit
anywhere in Georgia. Friday, the
closing day, was the big day of the
program and it more than pleased all
the visitors and should be exceeding
ly gratifying to everyone who had
any part in arranging and carrying
out the details of the event.
The crowd present Friday was per
haps the biggest that Zebulon had
ever had, hundreds of former resi
dents of Zebulon and of Pike county
having returned to pay homage to
their former home and the fellow
ship was fine. Hundreds renewed
acquaintances which time had to
some extent , dimmed and many
grasped hands who had not seen each
other in many years. There were
visitors from Atlanta and other
cities of the state and from all the
adjacent counties where former
citizens had gone to make their
homes.
The floats which enterprising citi
zens and business men from Zebu
lon, Concord, Meansville, Williamson
and other places had arranged made
a parade which instantly won the ad
miration and praise of everybody
there. These floats were simply
beautiful and reflected the highest
credit on those who created them.
This was decidedly one of the most
pleasing features of the occasion.
Barnesville w-as represented in this
line by a miniature building of Sar
dis Baptist church, now the First
Baptist church of Barnesville, found
ed in 1827, one of the first churches
of Pike county, and a buggy display
by Mr. W. B. Smith, owner of the
J. G. Smith & Sons buggy plant,
showing one of the buggies they
built about half century ago and one
of the beautiful present day buggies.
Barnesville had probably between
two hundred and three hundred peo
ple present during the day. A big
basket dinner was served by the peo
ple of Zebulon to numerous guests
and many of the county people had
basket dinners along so that they
could spend the day and enjoy all
the events.
A squad of the Gordon Cadets,
with their band, acted as escort for
the queen of the event and at the
conclusion of the parade, under the
command of Captain J- J- Hea, they
gave an exhibition drill, which was
witnessed with pleasure by the large
crowd. The Cadets added their full
share toward the success of the day’s
program.
The displays, which embraced
school exhibits, agricultural products
and the work of the women, which
were placed in the court house, in
the school building and in the stores,
attracted much attention and were
very creditable.
In the afternoon a large crowd as
sembled in the superior court room
where addresses were made by Dr. A.
B. Vaughan, of LaGrange, a native
