“Only the Scars . Remain,” gays Henry Hudson, of the James Smith Woolen CppaP Machinery Cos., {Hjßg Philadel p h i a , i Pa., who certi || i'll ties as follows: “ Among the many testiraoni a!a which I see r I in regard to eer |P® perform in g Kfim cures, cleansing Vfc*| the blood, etc., ' lOJ none impress me ■ pJ more than my own case. Twenty years ago, at the age of 18 years, I had >• swellings come 1 o n m y legs, rSEi which broke and fr \ became run. me no good, and it was feared tliat the bones would be affected. At last, my good old Mother Urged Me to try Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. I took three bottles, the sores healed, and I have not been troubled since. Only the scars remain, and the memory of the past, to remind me of the good Ayer’s Sarsaparilla has done me. ) J now weigh two hundred and twenty pounds, and am in the best of health. I have been on the road for the past twelve years, have noticed Ayer’s Sar saparilla advertised in all parts of the United States, and always take pleas ure in telling what good it did for me.” * Ayer’s Sarsaparilla Prepared by Dr. J. C. Ayer Sc Cos., Lowell, Mass. Cures others, will cure ycu •SAM JONES’ POLITICS. In his lecture to the Alabama Chautauqua at Shf lby Springs the other day, Sam Jones said: “Every 1 ttle politician thinks to make a speech he must talk about gold buggery and silver diggery. Avarice is at the foundation of every sin. Hell itself is nothing but self ishness on fire, and it’s a wonder to me some of you old brethren don't catch by natural combustion. A great many of jou sav, ‘l’m obliged to live.’ Well, that’s a lie. I’m obliged to do right. Pat God above gold, fcbaracter above chattels, man hood above morey. God never made b t one man and one woman and, they are nearly as scarce now ps they were then. There is many a woman in this country who thinks she’s well married when the poor thing’s an old maid yet, for she’s got no bus hand. A good many people are lay ing up treasure in Heaven at the rate of 25 cents a year, and then the old fools will never g°t there to en joy it. The curse of the world is little people. God’s eyes never looked upon a grander sight than a royal, brave, noble, true-hearted, genuine man. Nancy Hanks is a much higher or<d animal then Sulli van and Corbett. I like thoroughly bred h rses. I wish we had more tborougt -bred people. The young folks are after having a good time, the old folks are after the dollar and the devil is after-the whole thing, and he generally gets it, too. “I don’t know of but one politi cian in America who is absclutely unpurchasable and uribitlldczible, and that is old Grover Clevelaud. Id rather run with a rascal like a dem ocrat than a fool like apopulitf. I’d rather be a rascal than a fool, for you can reform a rascal. PALPITATIONOFTHE HEART. Shortness of Breath, Swell ing of Legs and Feet. “For about four years I wa9 trou bled with palpitation of the heart, shortness of breath and swelling of the legs and feet. At times I would faint. I was treated by the best phy sicians in Savannah, Ga., with no re lief. 1 then tried various Springs, without benefit. Finally I tried Dr. Miles’ Heart Cure also his Nerve and Liver Pills. -Af ter beoinning to take them Ijelt better. I continued taking them and I am now in better health than for many years. Since myrecovery I nave gained niiy pounds in weight. I hope this state ment may be of value to some poor sufferer. E. B. Miles Medical Cos.. Elkhart. Ind^ Chairman Clay Speaks. Hob. A. S. Clay made the first speech after the state convention. It was in Lawrenceville. Some .xti acts are given below. ‘•The populists are not bad men,” said he. “Many of them are good men, but they are mistaken. Alabama election puts an end to the popu lists in this country. T 1 ere will not be twenty populisms in the n<xt leg islature, and none in the next con gress. Tiny will never run at other race after this one; mark what I tell you.” e had two candidates for gover nor for the nomination,” he went on. ‘•General C. A. Evans, rbi ave and honest man, retired nobly, saying, No man will do more for the cause of democracy than I. Atkinson, the victor, will be elected governor of the great state of Georgia. See wb’at the democratic party in Georgia has done since J. M. Smith was made governor. Bullock’s administiation cost the state near one million dol ars. When the democrats got pos session, they found stupendous frauds, and that eight millions of dollars of fradulent bonds had been issued. Since 1872 the democratic party has appropriated twelve mil lion dollars for public schools. See what the democratic governors have done for the state! Would you ex change little Billy Peek or small Mr. Hines for any one of them ?” “The government must not sup port the citizen, but the citizen must In lp support the government. The state of Georgia spends aonuallv $3,945,900.80. “A populist said to me, where does all this money go? What do you democrats do with so much money ? I told him I could tell him where it all goes, and that in legitimate chan ! nels. To maimed soldiers annually $185,000; $1,100,00 to common schools; $400,000 to widows of Con federate soldiers, as the law former ly was. Also several hundred thou sand on the public debt. Georgia owes $8,000,000 but the Western and Atlantic railroad is worth every dollar of that. The lunatic asylum costs $185,000 annually; the acade my for the blind $16,000, and a good amount for the deaf and dumb asy lum. “The populist I was talking to agreed to all these expenditures as legitimate, but said he, T’. e dinged infernal judges—they get too much. I think I made that populist asham ed of himself, and he finally said, VAN WINKLE GIN & MACHINE CO, ATLANTA, GEORGIA, MANUFACTURERS OF- Cotton Seed Oil Mill Machinery, ~ Complete Fertilizer Machinery, Complete Ice Macnineryj COMPLETE CYPRESS TANKS WIND MILLS, PUMPS, ETC., COTTON GINS, FEEDERS, CONDEN • SERS ANU PRESSES ETC , ETC, The best system for elevating cotton and distributing same di rer-t to sins- Many gold medals have been awarded to us. Write for what you may want. We can save you money. Van Winkle Machinery Company. ‘Yes, I believe you democrats done about right.’ “Hut bow about oar national de moracy? Four things in the nati in it platform we have insisted up >n: of the first, tariff reform. The Wilson bill reduces the tariff on articles we use $75,365,000. In tan days or less time l pie lict c ingress will pass the* bill that will save the people million of h liars. •■The iecometax will bring in $65,- 000,000 a year. Tin populists used to cry out iuenne tax; but low we are about to pass it they say noth ing at all about it. “We will pass a bill t> elect Unit ed States senators by the people, for the people ought to elect them. “Then our party reduced the pensions $26,000,000 in a year, and by the time this administration clos es it will reduce it millions more by knocking out the frauds. “I am in favor of bimetallism. The democratic party takes the position that the two metals must be the same in value. If the silver is worth as much as goll, then there is no trouble in free and unlimited coin age of silver. I believe in two years other nations will come to the free and unlimited coiuageof silver. I am in favor of the coiuage of Doth gold and silver as provide! by the demo cratic platform. “What have the populists done in congress? Who nominated Judge Hines ? Tom Watson. Who nominat ed the entire ticket? Tom Watson.” “Ask them where are they going to? Tom W T atson. Who do you be -1 mg to? Mars Tom. I do not believe in this one man power. What has Mr. Peffer done ? He said in the United States Senate he wanted to see the House and Senate abolished and one man to rule. Of course they would have Tom Watson to rule. Mr. Peffer stood United States Senate for Anarchism arid Socialism. When I was in Chicago and saw five thousand strikers, I thought of the Goorgia farmer who lives near the little country church, and hitching his team to his wagon, taking bis wife and children to hear the blessed gospel. 1 thought of the farmer here who toils and earns a living for his family, and I said, the hope of tbis country is among the honest, plain people.” “Wnat else did the populists do in congress? Judge them by their re cord Better than they Dever hai a record. One populist introduced this bill in congress, that all pensions for ten years be paid at one time.” Mr. Clay told of othermeasuresintroduc ed in congress by populists. 1 Colonel Thomas E. Winn here ask- ed the speaker if the party should be responsible for what one man does in congress, Mr. Clay replied. Col onel Winn a number of ques tions, Mr. Clay giving short and cut ting auswers- The two gentlemen sparred some time, until the audience was wrought up into a tumult of excitement. Mr. Clay had the crowd and seemed to get the be.-t of the tilt. Mr. Wiun finally shouted, “I stand on our platform, and you will all at last come t > our platform.” Mr. Clay replied, “you will uev#r Lave another populist t lection in this country. Hines stands no showing and Twitty will be so badly beaten he will not know himself.” TWO LIVES SAVED. Mrs. Phoebe Thomas, of Junction City, 11!., was told oy her doctors sbe had Consumption and that there was no hope for hsr, but two bot tles of Dr. King’s New Discovery completely cured her and she says it saved uer life. Mr. Thos. Eggers, 139 Florida St. San Francisco, suffered from a dread ful cold, approachiug Consumption, tried without result eveiytbing else then bought one bottle of Dr. King’s New Discovery and in two weeks was cured. Those who goto tbecountry these sultry days to escupa-the city smir ches and smells and swd terings should shake the dust of the town from all their ways. They suould go loose frocked, loose footed unc >r-eted, untied, into the uncon ventional liberty of their country surroundings. The charm of the hills and valleys lies chiefly in tlio puny ineffectiveness of humor effort to destroy their beauty. Iu comp filing the soil to his uses the farmer fol lows in the track of nature; the clos er he keeps to her heels the greater his reward. Whogo s into country to shut his ears against its lovely silences, and his eyes against the glo ries of flowers, trees, grass, running brooks and the shimmering laud scapes that encompass him about, may, iudoed, rest himself; bit it. is the rest of a bear in his winter quar ters sucking his paws. Tbei*' is nothing in it but torpidity. But to the appreciative soul, what a wil !er uess of delights opens to every sense! The pure, fragraut air; the clear, cool w ter; the songs of b ids; the hum of smaller wings and voices; the shrill (latter of the locust; the occa sional barnyard crow or ca> klo—all find a responsive thrill when the wi - liug spirit subdues itself to us sur roundings. Benjamin Franklin laid down the true rule for country living: “Early to bed and early to rise.” To see the sun go dowu, und the moon come up, and to breathe m the grateful; coolness of the evening n r, is doubt less uu incomparable delight to loose who lay in their beds till the coffee is cold. Tuose who get up a little before the sun may witness a more glorious sight by so much s the coming on of day is more inspiring tbau the coming on of night. Look ing out of the early mists and dark ness toward the advancing splendors of the oast one may realize toe fancy of Poe: Then God smiled and it was morning. Matchless and supreme.
