The mean temperature of Greece is 64 degrees Fahrenheit. No part of Greece is forty miles from the sea nor ten miles from the hills. About one-half of the population are agriculturists and shepherds. It has an area of 24,977 square miles. It is the only country in the world whose armies are provided with the Gras guns and paper-covered car t tridges. j The Greek flag is a white cross on j a blue ground-the Bavarian colors and the Greek cross. Greece is more thickly populated than any other country in Europe, with the exception of Sweden and ! Prussia. It has few rivers and many hills. None of the former are navigable, and many of the latter are fortified. Its present boundary limits were determined by an arrangement among Great Britain,, France, Russia, and Turkey, concluded at Constantinople on July 21, 1832. Only about 70,000 of the inhab itants speak any language other than Greek and only about 20,000 profess any religion other than the orthodox. 'Fhe chief characteristics of the average Greek are his inquisitiveness, fondness for excitement, love of dis cussion, desire for knowledge, an ap titude for learning, and aggressive patriotism. The climate has two striking pe culiai ’ties—the heat in summer and the cold in winter are farmoreintense than those of any other country in the world lying in the same latitude. Gell once remarked that in traveling through the Morea in Ma r ch hefound “summer in Messenia, spring in La conia, and winter in Arcadia, without having moved beyond a radius of fifty miles.” BUCKLEN S ARNICA SALVE. Reaped To It “Doctor, will the boy be very badly deformed?” asked the anxious par er t. “I am sorry to have to tell you,” replied the eminent physician, “but he will alwaysbe mishappen. His legs will be crossed like a sawbuck, and he will have to walk 011 his hands and feet.” The stricken father wiped away a tear. “Well,” he said, bravely trying to smile, “1 shall try to do my duty to ward him. No dime museum shall ever have him for less than $75 a week.”—Chicago Tribune. Something to Depend On- Mr. James Jones, of the drug firm of lores A Son, Cowden, 111., in speaking of Dr. King’s New Discov ery, says that last winter his wife was attacked with La Grippe, and her case grew so serious that physicians at Cowden and Para could do noth ing for her. It seemed to develop in to Hasty Consumption. Having Dr. King's New Discovery in store, and selling lots of it, he took a bottle home, and to the surprise of all she bega 1 to get better from first dose, and half dozen dollar bottles cured her sound and well. Dr. Kings New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds is guaranteed to do this gooil work. Try it. Free trial bot tles at W. H. Chambers’ Drug Store. Don’t Lose Your Head- A great many people think that everything is going to the ilemnition bow wows, unless their views are car ried out. 'l'here who are, in public affairs, like the tides, a coming and a going. The wheel keeps turning. Those that are at the bottom to-day will he at the top to-morrow and vice ver sa. There is no danger of this great country of ours going to the dogs. Thomas Jefferson said: “If we are faithful to our country, if we acquiesce with good will in the decisions of the majority; ami the nation moves in mass in the same direction, although it may not be that which every indi vidual thinks best, we have nothing to fear from any quarter." OABTOHIA. The Gost of the Mississippi Flood- Aside from the great loss of human life by the flood in the Mississippi valley, the destruction of property will represent a financial loss almost be yond computation. The loss of hu man life is not, of course, to be com puted in dollars and cents. hirst, it is estimated that the floods will cut the cotton crop short 2,000,000 bales, representing a financial loss of about | $80,000,000. The loss of other crops, 1 the destruction of homes and farms and the drowning of live stock added to this will run up the total damage to a vasr sum, going beyond the SIOO, 000,000 mark. Some very interesting figures on the damage done by the flood are given in detail in a report just issued by the agricultural department at Washing ton. The report gives the actual damage up to April 6th, and therefore does not embrace the entire loss. Up to that time, however, the total flood ed area was 15.800 square miles of which about 8,000 square miles of territory was in Mississippi, 4-s°° j n Arkansas, 1,700 in Missouri, 1,200 in Tennessee and a small amount in Louisiana. This region contained, in 1890, about 358,000 people. Of these 186,000 were in Mississippi, 100,000 in Arkansas and the remain der are distributed in Missouri and Tennessee. It is estimated that the flooded district contains 39.500 farms. The total value of these farms, dis tributed in four states, is put at $65,- 000,000. The live stock on these farms reached a value of $7,500,000, with farm products on hand to the amount of $3,750,000 more. This submerged region produced last year about 370,000 bales of cotton, valued at close on $13,000,000; over 11,000, 000 bushels of corn, worth about $3,400,000, and wheat, oats, potatoes and hay worth over SBOO,OOO more. Dr. W. A. Wright. CASTORIA For Infants and Children, According to Bradstreet’s report on the earning’s of railroads for March the Southern lines made the best showing of any in the country, their increase being 8 per cent. For the first three months ot the present year the roads in the South showed an in crease also, which did not occur in but two other sections. Few people know that all plants contain digestive principles. They cannot absorb their food until it is digested any more than animals can. The Mount Lebanon Shakers have learned the art of extracting and utiliz ing these digestive principles, and it is for this reason that their Shaker Digesiive Cordial is meeting with such phenomenal success in the treatment of dyspepsia. The Shaker Digestive Cordial not onlv contains food al ready digested, but it also contains digestive principles which aid the di gestion of other foods that may be eaten with it. A single io cent sam ple bottle will be sufficient to demon strate its value, and we suggest that every suffering dyspeptic make a trial of it. Any druggist can supply it. Laxol. is the best medicine for chil dren. Doctors recommend it in place of Castor Oil. DeWitt’s Witch Hazel Salve Cures Piles, Scalds, Burns. The manager of the museum shook his head. “Its too bad,” he said. “I'd like to get one, but I guess 1 will have to give it up.” “What are you after ?” whose curiosity was aroused. “Why, the fact is,” explained the manager, “1 have been trying to get hold of some noted correspondent who has not been sent to Cuba to report ‘the exact facts’at some time or other." “I thought you knew too much to at tempt the impossible." returned the man whose curiosity has been aroused. Man’s Most Vulgar Habit. “If men were compelled to wear skirts for a period I think they would insist more than they now do that their fellow-men should stop the nasty I habit of spitting in public,” writes Ed ward W. Bok in the May Ladies’ Home Journal. “There is no prac- I tice of man which is more distressing |to women than this disgusting habit. Women constantly complain of it, es pecially in our larger cities, where ! sometimes the sidewalks are scarcely fit for them to walk upon. They re volt at the practice, and they are right in so doing. Yet year in and year out the habit not only continues, but increases, and the protection of clean liness, to which every woman walking upon our streets has a perfect right, is denied her. In New York City the Board of Health has taken the matter up on the grounds of public health, and the Police Department is lending its cooperation in the enforce ment of an ordinance directed against the evil. No action taken in New Y'ork for years is so highly to be com mended, and the ordinance should quickly extend to other cities and be put into force. It is an undertaking which public opinion will sustain in whatever part of the country it is at tempted. Every community should be urged to try the experiment. * * The time is ripe when every decent man should take some steps to see to it that the nastiest and most vulgar of all American habits should be en tirely stopped. New York City has started the reform. Let the Boards of Health of a few of our other large cities take up the question, and the reform, which appeals to every clean minded man and woman, will soon spread. It is a work in every way calling for the attention and action of Boards of Health and all bodies and citizens interested in the health of communities. The spitting habit is an absolute menace to the public health. * * Smaller communities need not wait for the larger cities. The decent men of the smallest com munity can come together, awaken in terest in the matter and see that a prohibitive ordinance is passed. And if the men are slow in seeing their du ty it is to be devoutly hoped that the women will take the question in hand and see to it that this disgusting habit receives that necessary public atten tion which it has lacked in the past.” Personal.— The gentleman who annoyed the congregation last Sunday by continually coughing will find in stant relief by using One Minute Cough Cure, a speedy and harmless remedy for throat and lung troubles. Dr. W. A. Wright. ft Chance For Jorkins. “These are scathing political times when it behooves every man to be up and doing!” said Jorkins at breakfast. “Yes, dear,” said his wife, “why wouldn’t it be a good time to take up the spare room carpet you are feeling like beating everything in sight.” CA.STOHIA. It is said that “A. Swindle” is the name that appears over the office door of a struggling lawyer in the city of Stratford, Ont. A friend of the unfortunate gentleman suggested th 3 advisability of writing out his first name in full, thinking that Arthur or Andrew Swindle, as the case might be would sound better and look bet ter than the significant “A Swindle.” When the lawyer, with tears in his eyes, whispered to him that his name was Adam, the friend understood and was silent.
