MAN BEHIND WHEEL CAUSES THE ACCIDENTS It‘s the man behind the wheel that’s to blame for all highway accidents, says Dr. Don Tysinger of Dothan, a member of Houston County Safety Council, and consult ant to the Alabama Highway Safety Commission. Tysinger was speaking to this week’s meeting of the Lions club. David Davis was program chairman. The speaker related the number of deaths, injuries and accidents in Georgia last year, and said every one of them can be blamed on the drivers of the oars involved. “Detroit can keep claiming they are trying to make cars safe, but they are only trying to make them faster, more comfortable and prettier,” he said. “Look at and examine a late model automobile and you will see that it is not de signed for safety at high speeds.” The tendency of the public to blame laws, enforcement officers and the courts for large number of accidents is wrong too, according to Ty singer. “We have good laws, our officers and courts do a good job, but nothing will do anything to stop the needless crippling and killing until the drivers become more skilled, and more capable,” he said Tysinger recommends driv er training as the best way to reduce accidents. “We need to get rid of the idea that driv ing is a ‘right.’ It is a privi lege, and we ought to be more careful about letting just a bout anybody get a driver’s license,” he said. The speaker stressed the need for every driver to heed speed limits. There are rea sons for the posting of limits of speed and each driver should go as slow as the signs say. Then Dr. Tysinger told the men a few tips on handling a vehicle under various condi tions.
