VERNON, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOV. 23, 1905. MR. GUS COLLINS IS DEAD. I Our community was shocked on ; yesterday when it was announced A. W. Collins of Ailey 1 was dead. Few of his neighbors knew that lie was even ill. He took cold while serving on the jury here during the past two weeks which developed into pneu monia, and he passed away at 8 o’clock on Tuesday night. Mr. Collins was a jovial veteran ;of the civil war, and was about (50 ! years of age. His universal good nature made him a host of friends and many who heard his words of good cheer only lust week will lie pained to hear of his sudden de parture. He passed through the I war with whole limbs, but lost | his right arm by a fall from a horse in 1892. He leaves a devoted wife and seyeral grown sons and daughters |to sorrow at his departure. His remains were laid to rest m the family burial place on yesterday. May he rest in peace. BACON’S WATCH. Washington, Nov. 18.—Senator Bacon of Georgia, who recently returned from Europe, wears on the lapel of his coat a tiny watch, not bigger than a man’s thumb nail. In spite of its extreme del icate mechanism, the watch keeps igood time. Senator Bacon’s pur pose in wearing it so conspicuous ly is to curtail interviews with tedious persons. The man who can talk with the senator on any unimportant subject for any great length of time with the little watch staring him in the face and marking the passing minutes must be possessed of considerale cour age or colossal nerve. Cheap Rates. On account of the Savannah In dustrial Exposition, Dec. 12th to 16th, the Seaboard Ry. will sell round-trip tickets at the rate of one and a third fare, plus 25 els. SOME COURT NOTES. : . ‘Many of the old citizens of tho county were present at court and recounted to friends the happen ings of the long ago. Some of them lived over again the scenes of the war between the states, and some pictured for us the good old dAs of fifty years ago when they piMod the oars on rafts of timber through “Bugg’s Suck,” “The Old ’Oman’s Pocket,” “Little Hell” and other points between here and j j Darien. | Col. J. M. Stubbs spent Friday j and Saturday of the last week in the chase, being one of the Niin rods of the Oconee bar. Judge Martin spent Saturday evening lip to train time in wind ing up the session of the term, and departed for his home to open up at Eastman Monday morning. No officer is more untiring in the discharge of his duties than Solicitor General Graham. He never lets up until the last point is made. The grand jury, without regard to the stereotyped statement of their predecessors for tho past 25 j years, did not find the old court j house “in good condition,” but actually recommended tlie build-! mg of a new one. What has come over the spirit of our dicams? Has I a wireless wave of progress actually j struck us? The most important case tried ion the criminal side of the court lust week was that of Charlie Pet erson, white, as accessory to the j killing of Mack Key at Ailey Some ! months ago. Thursday and Kri- 1 day were spent on the trial and ! Peterson was acquitted. Flournoy : Dees charged with the same of j sense, was allowed to enter a nolle j prosequi, the evidence being the same as in the ease of Peterson. | Frank Martin, the Longpond negro who assaulted Deputy Sher iff Taylor while he was trying to arrest Jake Mercer, jabbing the| officer in the mouth with his gun which was discharged just as it j was knocked aside, was found guilty, and recommended to the j extreme mercy of the court. lie was fined SSOO or twelve months p! on the gang. Judge Martin announced that j an adjourned term of court would j tie held the second Monday (Bth | (lay) in January. The grand jury j was discharged Saturday, subject i to a recall at the special b rin. VVe hear words of commenda tion on all sides for the work of the grand jury. That body seems to have attended to the business in band from a strict sense of duty and and a high regard for the obligations resting on them, j The bill introduced in the last legislature to establish a city court for Montgomery county, and which passed the senate where it originated, expressly provides that I the judge and solicitor shall be. j elected by the people. !
