FOR THE LITTLE ONES. 6ome Intemting Game* to Be Played With Jackttones. Os course von hoys and irl s all know how to play jaok»}tono,t, but you may not know all the games that can be played with them. Do vou know “Cats in the Well,' for instance? It is played in the following fashion: Roll the jacks from the hand to the ground; these are the eats. Then place your left hand near them, with the fist lightly closed, the thumb ami first finger forming the opening to one well. Jack may now he thrown up, and, while lie is in the air, one of the four cats on the ground must lie picked up and put in the well. Repeat the operation with the second, third and fourth cats until oil have been drowned in the well. The left hand may now he taken away, leaving the dead cots in a hunch. Now jack may he tossed tip, and this time all four eats must he pick ed up before jack comes down. Shakespearo or Shaksperaf It is not to he wondered at that boys and girls are sometimes puz zled over the spelling of the great poet’s name. It is written in three different ways—Shakespeare, Shnk epeare and Khakspcre. Which of those is right? The fijst is gener ally preferred, though many of our liest, scholars write it Shakspere, contending that it is right because his autograph signature appears in that form. At the same time it should he rememliered that the name appeared as Shakespeare on the title page of hooks that lie su perintended, and tins warrants the belief that he accepted it as the cor rect spelling, in spite of the auto graph signature. There is very lit tle authority for the form Sliak speare. Ten Square Feet. Some of the schools have a sim ple so called “catch question” that is much in vogue among the pupils at times. It is, “What is the dif ference between ten square feet and ten feet square?” Now and then an unwary boy or girl trips over it and answers, “There is no differ ence," hut a little thinking shows them that then l is a good deal of difference. Ten square feet means an area equal to a parallelogram measuring ten feet on one side and one foot on the other; the parallel ogram contains, therefore, only ten square feet. Ten feet square, how ever, means a square measuring ten feet on each of its sides, which, therefore, contains 100 square feet. Tommy’* Doubtful Complimant. A teacher was instructing n class of hoys, and had spent half an hour trying to drive into their heads the difference between man and the lower animals, but apparently with little success. “Tommy,” he said, oonxingly, to a little chap, “do you know the dif ference hotwemi, sav, me and a pig, or any other brute?” “No,” replied Tommy, innocent ly. hut another teacher standing by laughed. Why Ha Worriad. A Chicago bov said to his mother: “I’m not afraid in the dark, but I was afraid last night. I went to the kitchen closet all alone in the dark by myself, and 1 was awfully afraid. ’ “Vou are a foolish boy,” replied his mother, "for there is nothing in the dark that can hurt you.” “Oh. 1 wasn’t afraid of that," an swered the rogue; "1 was afraid I wouldn’t find any cake there!” No*** Out of Joint. You needn't cry and look so sad. 1 love you. pussy, dear, the same— I truly do- aa 1 loved you Before this cunnins kitten came, ltut things arc changed a little now. You know, and 'cause he Is so small I've irot to ‘tend the most to him— Your nose Is out of Joint, that's all. r*on't you remember that cold day They left me hours and hours In tied? And when nurse came for me at last. "Your nose Is out of Jotnt," she said— •'A baby s come to live with ut" Well. than, that's what's the matter now You might have known how It would be. Oh. dear, my head' Please don't meow. Or 1 must send you from the room. Nice little girls don't make a noise When their mammas give almost all Their kisses to small ml faced boys. I tell you. puss, you are too M* To sit with kit upon my knee. And It's no worse for you to have Your nose put out of Joint than me. —Margaret Kytlnga.
